Reflective Essay: Minority Representation In The Media
The informative speech assignment allowed me to recognize my growth in my ability to present and understand my material since the previous speech. For my narrative speech, I received a B, which I felt could have been higher with more adequate preparation and an essential focus on my outline. By reviewing my past constructive criticisms and strengthening my positive speech qualities, I completed the necessary requirements to benefit my practice and delivery for the informative speech. I selected the topic of minority representation in the media for this particular presentation. I am personally very passionate about understanding social justice issues and bringing awareness to the microaggressions that marginalized communities face. Therefore, it was relatively feasible to begin the process. I dedicated several hours to polishing my visual aid and gathering my research from reliable sources. Afterwards, I decided to organize my ideas in topical order, focusing specifically on women, queer people, and people of color. I …show more content…
As the speeches neared mine, I felt overwhelmed with nerves. However, I recalled positive tactics for this and proceeded to squeeze my fists, take deep breaths, and sit in a more confident pose (Lucas). Once I reached the podium, I instantly felt better and was eager to bring the information to my peers’ attention. As I reached the core of my content, I felt surprised by the extent I was able to speak extemporaneously. The feedback I received was great, as well. I noticed my peers paying close attention and nodding, especially those who were affected by the ideas I was emphasizing. Generally they seemed interested, but I took negative feedback into account, as well. Some did not seem as engaged, and I assumed it was due to the fact that they were still awaiting their turn to present. Another one of my peers was falling asleep, but I also figured it was due to a lack of sufficient rest the night

Reinforcing identity values, diversity, and notions of intersectionality, are all core issues facing contemporary society. In this current national political climate, the need for accepting diversity and valuing differences is at the top of the societal list. With movement after movement sprouting, people are looking for socially powerful leaders to lead them in the direction of societal and political reform. When minorities examine media sources and view the faces that represent their country, the rarity of individuals who share the same qualities is frightening. It is not simply about the diversity of the physicality, but about the diversity of those who are willing to enact a positive social change. It is to have…

Miss Representation, the 2011 documentary about how the mainstream media depicts women negatively in the United States, educates the viewers on the harmful media representation that is brought upon women. Females who are featured in the media are often depicted as a sexual image to men. When the film states that “the media is selling young people the idea that girls’ and women’s value lies in their youth, beauty, and sexuality and not in their capacity as leaders.” it informs the viewer that the media is a dangerous tool used to explicitly demand what women should do, say, buy, and look like. The audience is directed towards anyone who is interested in learning more about the ways the media adversely portrays women. The tone of the film alters…

Today we see African Americans depicted in music videos, film, tv shows, news, and many other platforms of entertainment and media, but how many of those representations are correct? Realistically, it is impossible to represent whole racial groups and ethnicities, which is why generalizations and stereotypes are created. But the misrepresentation of African Americans in media and entertainment only further stimulates stigma, racism, mistreatment, and discrimination in and towards the black community.…

Rebecca Ann Lind in “Considerations of Media Effects” in Race/Gender/Media: Considering Diversity Across Audiences, Content and Producers discusses the social psychology of stereotypes, cultivation theory, global media influences, and formation of self-image. First off, schemas describe expectations one has about the world. Stereotype, a type of schema, shows how one distinguish knowledge on social groups. The cultivation theory expresses that viewers construct a perception of the world through what they see on television. Television cultivates ideas about marriage, interpersonal relationships, family, and beauty. Likewise, television programs from the United States have the power to globally influence those in different cultures and create an ideological homogenization of the world. Lastly, the levels of television consumption affect individuals and the creations of their self-image.…

The fact that there is a lack of a biological basis for racial difference raises fundamental socio-political questions as to why certain groups are marginalised in society and others are not. The notion of being Australian or ‘un- Australian' is facilitated and maintained by the news media and their ability to portray nationalist stereotypes. This ability to construct racial boundaries based on the ideas of ‘nationalism' and ‘otherness' must therefore be scrutinised in order to uphold the basic human right's that apply to all citizens living in a liberal democracy. Using the negative representations of asylum seekers in 2001, I will argue that the relationship between the news media and the government perpetuated racism, and furthermore, that the media failed in their cross-examining role as…

There are many shows on T.V. today that shows African-Americans in a negative light. There is more representation of people color in the media than in past times, the quality of the product is more important than quantity. Fun has been poked fun at the African-American throughout the years, by presenting a character of buffoon or childlike quality. The reproduction of stereotypes of African- Americans in film has existed since the day of slavery. Early in the 20th century the coon character was developed. The representation of the coon was of lazy, non- accountable, watermelon eating, and using improper English type person. A common question amongst Black people is what defines one’s blackness? UrbanDictionary.com describes blackness as being the measure of how well a person fits into the black stereotype. The black stereotype is typically a person from the ghetto who listens to rap music or using slang instead of Standard English. However, do most blacks really fit into the stereotypes? The American entertainment industry, specifically the television and film industries, has identified being black as being a negative issue which causes some people to view Blacks as subpar American citizens because of the way they speak or dress which sometimes leads to self-hatred or internalized racism.…

Preparing myself to face my first speech to a large audience, I’m going to extend to come off as if I’m going to be confident and try to do my best as in not sending the audience an opposite message. The strategies that I’m going to use to control the butterflies in my stomach are the pacing method. With the pacing it is going to the nervousness away from me. Also while presenting my speech I’m going to listen to the audience to make sure they are enjoying it and not getting bored or the opposite approach of it. Another strategy I’m going to use to better help me with my speech is to have an good sense of humor while reading my speech that way the audience can come off as being comfortable with me. Lastly the strategy that I find greatly important is to kind of memorize the speech while presenting it that way I won’t have to keep looking down at my paper too much; I will generate good eye contact with the large audience to make them feel front-page and very cheerful at the same time. The steps that I believe I would need to take to become an better listener is give good eye contact because when looking at an person as they speak you generally hear everything they are saying. Another strength that would help me become a better listener is to talk less than I’m actually listening to the person speak and to also challenge assumptions. I believe that it is important to challenge the assumptions certainly because in order to get what you need to know from someone and to also make good decisions about what you have heard you have to have listen to the speaker. My prior weakness that I do while listening to a speech is having additional things distracting me while listening to a speech and that causes me to get sidetracked. I affirm that to make me become a better listening I should give the speaker a clear view and open ears to listen to their speech because I extremely would want the same thing in return. My most important thing that I would want to strength in is to…

Race in media is a topic that has been getting a lot of attention due to many people becoming more aware of underrepresentation of people of color, suppression of color which is a result of whitewashing in order to be more accepted in white culture, and stereotypes that have been placed upon them from preventing people of color to pursue success. With major award shows having a problem with representation and the “black lives matter” movement making people more aware of the issue of underrepresentation and misinterpretation of other races in media. America has a history of being a country that favors the white American, using slavery and race studies that infer that the white race is the superior race. This mindset has continued through the…

This is a bridge from narrative to informative speaking where we use the entire speech preparation process but without the need for external research. In narrative speeches we simply relate a personal incident in the natural order of events as they occurred. We now move to another form of personal expression (complaining!) that is just as natural as storytelling, but requires a bit more analysis and preparation. We will be applying the basics of organization, outlining, introductions, conclusions, transitions, and support while continuing to practice delivery and audience adaptation. This is also an opportunity to experiment with visual aids.…
