Reflective Essay: Moving To Iowa
I was born and raised in a small town in northern Minnesota called Isle. We had a rounded population of about 700 people, and everybody knew one another. The school I had gone to was very small. Each graduating class was probably around 50 students, and every class was fit into one small building located in the heart of Isle. I attended there till 6th grade, when my mom and dad approached my brother and I with the news that we were going to be moving to Iowa to be closer to most of our family. The news was frightening to me, the fact of knowing that i was going to have to leave all of my close friends and basically start my social life over. Once we had moved and go settled into our new house it was mid summer of 2012. I had no friends to hangout with and had no locational knowledge of our new town. As the school year approached, I was preparing my inner self for meeting new people and entering a school I had never seen befor. Knowing that I was transferring from a class of 50 to a class of 500 blew my mind. I had never experienced an environment that large in my life. I was …show more content…
I was dazed by the modern and new appearance of the building, all the glass and metal beams was very fascinating. Compared to the school I had come from, which was basically just plain red brick. The minute I stepped into the building I had no idea where to go or what to do. So many new faces surrounded me that I was put into a awkward shock. I wasn't a very social person at the time so I basically minded my own business. The first period period bell eventually rang and I had no idea where to find my first period class was, so I approached a teacher and asked. I stated, “Hi, sorry im new here and I can't find my first period class,” they were very understanding and walked me all the way to my class. At this point in the morning my nerves had reached their peak and I was about to walk into my first class ever,

I dreaded the alarm that woke me up at 6:30 in the morning. It was as loud as a screaming toddler that could be heard for miles. I groggily got out of bed and got ready for my first day of school. It was a weird feeling not putting on a uniform like I had been for the past nine years, but I also enjoyed that freedom. The nervousness became more and more intense as I could closer and closer to campus. When we arrived, I got out of the car, and watched my dad drive off to go take my younger sister to school. There was no going back now; I had no other choice than to walk through those doors. I felt like my throat was in my stomach. I noticed some familiar faces, and I walked towards them. While I was approaching my friends, a senior, facing toward me, walked passed. He must have been at least six feet tall, which was incredibly intimidating for me at just over five feet. I was not used to the fact that I’d potentially have classes with these giants. Additionally, the array of new teachers, and having to learn all of their teaching styles and things they did or did not tolerate was hard in…

All I remember was how it looked like a ghost town. There were hardly any cars on the road and nothing looked open.. This was not what I was used to. We checked into our room at the Holiday Inn, our new house for a little over a month while finding a house to buy, and I shortly fell asleep, being exhausted from our 12 hour journey. Me, my mom, stepdad, sister, and my cat were all crammed into a little, one room, hotel with two beds and one bathroom, I was miserable. For about a week and a half, a played hookie and helped my mom house hunt. Eventually, she decided I had been out of school long enough. That next morning, my mom pulled me into Guntersville Middle School. I was worried because I was ridiculously shy and figured I would have an extremely hard time making friends, but oh was I wrong. Before homeroom was over everyone in the sixth grade class knew there was a ‘new girl from Texas’. That’s when I met Charlie Conner and Anna…

Having lived in a variety of countries, I have developed a level of interest and compassion for various communities and environments. I often felt like an outsider when my family and I would initially move to a new city. The unique experience of being able to look into a community or society from the outside allowed myself to not only appreciate but also analyze my surroundings. Growing up in South Korea, California and Louisiana, due to my father’s work, allowed me to appreciate different cultures while developing an awareness for the greater, overarching society of the world. I was able to be a part of the individual culture of each distinct community while developing an appreciation for the way in which all communities are connected.…

Most people have moved before sometime in their life. For me, it was only two times. The first move was an international move from Vietnam to the United States of America, when I was barely 8 months old. At the time, it was just my mom, dad, and me, moving across the world to start a new life. Something I have learned from moving is that it is hard to change your life, home, and environment but if you give it some time, nothing is impossible.…

The memory of my first big move is still fresh in my mind. I remember rushing to school, excited to tell my friends the news: I was moving from New Jersey to Phoenix, Arizona! After I brought my friends up to date, I proudly displayed my new disposable camera. Together we took many pictures, some of them meaningful and some comical. There were pictures of myself smiling and giggling with my friends and some of my teacher’s feet. As the moving date was slowly approaching, I began to feel resentment. I started hating the idea of moving to a new unknown place where I would have no friends. As it turned out, making new friends was not as hard as I thought because I was younger and I chose my friends superficially. However, I did have to learn to adapt to a new school and curriculum. I was not…

This great change in my life was when my family was forced to move to a new city when I was fourteen. Not only, was I facing a great change, but it would be a change that would affect me for the rest of my life. When I found out that we were moving, I was frightened. My first day of college went a little like this. Coming in as a freshman I was scared and nervous. I arrived at a small building consisting of two floors and about 20 classrooms. I wasn’t really worried about getting lost, but how can I get lost in a small building anyways. After rooming the hallways for a few minutes I head to class. My class was an average of 22 students. I walk in to take a seat; it was so quite I was able to hear a pin drop. It took me by surprise when some one finally spoke. He began talking about the class they had…
