Reflective Essay: My Growth As A Writer
Writing, where do I begin...? Throughout my educational career I have always absolutely hated writing. Why do I need to research and write about the use of fossil fuels? Why do I need to write a reflection on this novel? It never made sense to me, and I never felt myself progressing as a writer. Although I was required to do these things this semester in English, I so much more to do and in return, I feel that I have grown immensely as a writer. Through IWA’s, Freewrite’s, and other writing techniques taught by Professor Pretorius, my writing skills have grown tenfold versus what they previously were. I feel that this class has greatly prepared me for the future writings I may have to do in the rest of my educational career. One thing that has helped me grow as a writer this year was the use of freewriting. I had never heard of this technique before this class but I’m sure glad I finally learned about it. Freewriting helps so much in allowing me to get my ideas out of my head and down on the paper. In addition, it solved my problem of sitting at my computer with a blank word document open not knowing what to write. I now have a general idea beforehand, and am able …show more content…
For that project, we were asked to find a common problem within our major or the correlating career field. In return, we had to come up with a unique solution to said problem. This project helped me by allowing me to explore my career field/major and really see the potential problems. It also helped with my interviewing skills as I had to interview two people for the paper, and many others in my statistical analysis. Also with this paper, I was faced with the challenge of writing a paper of this length. Although miniscule compared to other college papers, this was by far the longest one I have ever had to write. In saying that, the use of freewriting and the skills I obtained from IWA’s helped me layout the paper

Health Management Associates is a Naples-based for-profit hospital chain that owns 71 hospitals, 23 of which are in Florida (newspress). There have been many whistleblowers within the company that have brought allegations against HMA for focusing on the profits of the company over the proper medical attention of patients. In August 2013, the major shareholder of HMA, Glenview Capital Management LLC, with about 9.6% of stocks lead to the complete removal of the board of directors. There is currently a merger occurring in which HMA will go under another for-profit hospital chain company called Community Health Systems which will form the second largest for-profit hospital chain by revenue (nytimes). Glenview also pushed for this (fierce). The Department of Justice is backing many of those who have reported claims through qui tam cases. The CEO, Gary D. Newsome, left the company a few months ago to lead a mission trip, but is currently part of the cases as well. Several of the lawsuits point to Newsome as the inventor of the strategy used to raise admissions to emergency rooms (nytimes). The idea here is that the company gives incentives to the doctors to admit more patients to the emergency room to meet a quota. There are reports of the company using a software called Pro Med to keep scorecards for the doctors. The goal is to admit at least half of the patients over 65 that visit, the scorecards have the doctors highlighted in different colors: green for on target, yellow for those who were close, and red for doctors that were failing. Jacqueline Myers, a worker for the company that hires the doctors used by HMA, reported that she received the order to fire the doctors and red, but said no followed by being fired (nytimes). A CFO in a Georgia branch of HMA did a separate investigation of the admission rates and found them to be higher compared to other hospitals.…

    1. The differences between Lincoln and Douglas on what right blacks Americans are entitled to enjoy: Abraham Lincoln was a Whig leader in the early nineteen century (1847-1849). In his view, he believed that blacks should have the same right as white. People were born with their own natural right, so Lincoln assumed that blacks could enjoy their liberty and freedom. On the other hand, Douglas stood on the view that “this government was first established it was the policy of its founders to prohibit the spread of slavery into the new territories of the United States”. Therefore, he believed that slavery could still exist in some states in America.…

I have more weaknesses than strengths as a writer. I am not the best writer, I have always had struggle in English class. My personal strengths as a write are being able to understand the concept and being able to find evidence to support my claim/thesis. My personal weaknesses as a writer are editing and grammar. Occasionally, I use the wrong past tense and need improvement on sentence and paragraph structure. I tend to repeat myself a lot. By utilizing four steps, I can effectively write an essay on the topics assigned during this program (Bethel, 2015). The first step is developing a clear point and is followed by supporting ideas. I plan to use quick notes to get my ideas down and make sure I need them. Next I need to organize my ideas to explain how I arrived at my thesis. Finally, I need to proofread my writing to omit any grammar or writing mistakes. These steps can help my writing be more concise and improve over time.…

Two years ago, I would say nothing in particular provokes me about writing. I would rather spend my valuable time on presentations or discussions than writing research papers. I always found myself was lost. I couldn’t focus on the content of my prompt. I failed to make my words convincing and authoritative. I am not a good researcher, also not an outstanding rhetorical writer, even today, but I did find something valuable on myself in these two years.…

I have learned that revising your writing makes it way better than before. You find your mistakes and realize you can replace words such as “bring to” to a different high vocabulary word such as “cease”. I know now that there is no way to make your paper perfect. There will always be a word, words, or sentence you could change. In addition, I’ve gained a better understanding on passive and active sentences. Once I was done writing my paper, and began to reread it I found some passive sentences. All I did was revise the sentence which helped my writing flow better. Initially, I read the first paper I wrote for the Quarter 1 Writing Assessment and I noticed that I didn’t follow the directions completely. As I read on, there were many simple sentences and not many transitional words.…

When one masters a certain practice, one becomes confident and nearly perfects the practice either because one had guidance or practiced continuously. I have not put myself in either one of those situations. To be honest, I write ‘put myself’ because I believe I had the choice of removing myself from classrooms to another better one; and the choice of being able to discipline myself to practice writing continuously.…

Throughout this semester I have received a lot of input and criticism on my essays from my TA, my professor and fellow students. This semester I was fortunate to receive quick, fairly reliable, built in feedback. From the feedback that I have received by taking this class I believe that I have become a better writer as it was beneficial for the most part. Feedback that I received from my fellow students was occasionally helpful. It typically varied from week to week. One week I would write a paper and get a ton of markings and criticism on it which was helpful because I was able to see what I did wrong and I would rarely have to get it proof read another time. Other times I would turn in a paper and it would come back with few markings and comments. This felt almost like a waste of time because I knew that I had more mistakes that I did not catch earlier. Because of this I would have to go out of my way and someone else would have to go out of their way to get it proof read again, or I would risk handing in the good copy with mistakes. One thing that I appreciated from peer evaluation days was that was able to see what worked in my paper, what did not and what I need to improve on.…

Over the course of this year in English, I think my writing process has excelled the most along with my overall writing. In the past, I have used similar techniques to develop a final essay, but, this year, I have begin to rely more heavily on planning out and slowly chipping away at my essays and papers. I believe also that because of this planning the strength of my writing as a whole has grown. Personally, I do not think that I grew in my vocabulary usage. Overall this year, I grew as a writer in ways that I would not have predicted.…
