Reflective Essay: The Assistant To The Assistant And The Office
My foray into the working world has not been glamorous . Naive notions of enormous paychecks and thunderous applause have been replaced with a deeper understanding that small, incremental experiences form a foundation for my future.

Although I landed the opportunity, I found myself full of hesitation the night before beginning my serving assistant job. My family taunted me by referring to my new job as the Assistant to the Assistant Server referring to the T. V. show “The Office”. In the end, the teasing helped diffuse my nervousness.

As young college students we often have jobs that are customer service oriented. We can all relate to what Quentin Schultze is saying in the section “Putting Our Hearts into Our Stations” we he says “My first paid job was cleaning and restocking shelves in a family drugstore. After one week, I had mastered the work and grown bored (Schultze 37).” This is so relatable to me. Growing up in Puerto Rico, I’ve been working since the early age of 14 and even before then I helped out my mother with her business and my grandparents at their farm. My very first job outside of my family was as an office aid at a human resource department, I felt very lucky being so young, surrounded by adults in their fancy suits. Little did I know the title office aid…

My punctuality, attention to detail, and people skills are what make me an excellent office administrative assistant. First of all, I hate being late to anything. I strive to be on time, or early, in appropriate situations. When I know that I will be unable to attend or have no control over being late, I am prompt to notify the individuals I am on my way to see. It is very rare that I am tardy to any scheduled meetings. Secondly, I strive to have an excellent attention to detail. Some would say I am a perfectionist with my work. I look projects over dozens of times before handing them in, and make sure that everything is up to my standard. I proofread very well, and I am usually the one people come to for editing advice. Lastly, I have wonderful…

Most of my experience involves working with children or youth. In 2012, I was the Office Assistant to the Field Director of the Mitt Romney Presidential Campaign Office in my city. As an Office Assistant, I was responsible for reporting data to the Florida GOP, as well as conducting phone banking and door-to-door surveys. One of my biggest assignments was to recruit volunteers, and I asked teachers from my old high school for an opportunity to speak in their class. Their students, as well as other children from the community, decided to come on Saturdays to volunteer.…

Job satisfaction is key in finding enjoyment in your day-to-day work experience. Sadly, people have substituted satisfying jobs with jobs that they took just to make a living. The problem is that people get scared that they cannot make it with the passions they have. One might think that they cannot make it as a musician so they settle for something else. One might think that they cannot make it as a professional athlete so they settle for something else. I have explored many journals, articles, and other research papers to figure out why that is. As a result I have found that people are born with a fear of living essentially. This fear is because we need to always provide for ourselves the basic necessities of life to survive. One of those necessities is making money as a means to purchase things for other needs. I will seek to reveal to the reader the need for an external force to get rid of this fear and pursue what they know will make them truly satisfied with their jobs.…

Human nature dictates that we tend to fear the unknown. A new job, a new home, a new exercise class, and indeed, a new way of working. In the words of authors James Belasco and Ralph Stayer, we tend to hold on so tightly to what we have -a corner office or cubicle with a colossal cherry oak desk - that we neglect to think about what we may gain by giving that up – increased collaboration, great spaces to complete each work task, increased mobility and so forth.…
