REFLECTIVE ESSAY PD1
Life is a journey whereby one is continually learning new things or improving what is already known. The year I have spent at University has marked an era of academic and social learning though from a different platform. Initially the journey has been marked with feelings of apprehension, anxiety, anticipation and sometimes confusion. In the succeeding account, I reflect on the past year at university and placement focusing on the knowledge and skills acquired as well as hitches encountered.
Reflection has been defined as a way of examining in detail one’s experiences in order to search for the possibility of other explanations and alternative ways of doing things (Howartson-Jones, 2010). In a way it becomes a process which transforms the person and their actions. Bolton (2010) supported this by highlighting that reflective practice enables the practitioner to learn from experience about themselves and their work. It is from this knowledge that I have learnt that at this tertiary level it is vital to reflect on everything I do, hear or see because it makes me aware of my strengths and weaknesses. This consequently informs my performance and practice in university and on placement respectively.
I have come to appreciate the importance of managing my time effectively. During the course of the year I faced major challenge of not managing my time effectively. I attribute this fact that it took me time to adjust and draw a balance between my family and studies so much that in some instances I lagged behind in my research and knowledge. I did not particularly plan and outline my key goals hence I spent so much time doing trivial things. It has therefore impressed on me the necessity of drawing up a weekly working schedule with study time allocated for the varied subject areas and review whether I have met my targets for each week.This hopefully will aid me in managing time effectively as time management has been described as a development of
