First and foremost, I need to effectively complete the ADN program at CCCC; then register for and pass the NCLEX to be able to practice as a registered nurse. In an effort to accomplish these objectives I have successfully completed 61 of the required 73 credit hours for the Associate Degree Nursing curriculum. I am currently enrolled in NUR 233 and NUR 235; successful completion of the remaining 12 credit hours will …show more content…
earn me the ADN degree. With regard to the NCLEX, I have submitted my application and payments to the NCBON (to include payment of background check and submission of fingerprints) and to Pearson for testing. My strengths and opportunities are that I am currently maintaining a passing average in both classes, I have an amazing support system of friends and family, and I am determined to accomplish my dream of becoming a nurse. I have registered for the Hurst NCLEX review over Spring Break in preparation for the NCLEX and have purchased and are utilizing two additional NCLEX study resources. Possible weaknesses or threats would be I have “senior-itis” and am very ready to graduate which is altering my ability to focus and concentrate on the tasks at hand.
Once that is complete I can focus on providing a high quality of care to patients and their families in the community. As a student nurse, I have had many opportunities in the clinical setting to establish and build upon my care giving. My strengths and opportunities for this are my strong commitment to practice, education, research, and collaboration. I enjoy reading research articles about medical advances, new EBP, and the nursing practices in general. I plan to take every opportunity to learn and grow utilizing all possible resources, including but not limited to nurses, doctors, patients, respiratory therapy, physical therapy, dietary, and any other member of the interdisciplinary team. Possible weaknesses or threats in accomplishing this may be my quiet nature, being too busy as a new nurse to take the time to ask questions or do research on the topic in question, or others being too busy to answer my questions.
To acquire a full time position at OMH, I need to submit an online application, construct a well-written resume and cover letter, and introduce myself to the nurse manager on the unit of my choice.
In an effort to obtain a full time position as an RN at OMH, I have constructed an effective resume and cover letter, submitted several online applications to different units, and contacted the Human Resources Director informing her of my applications and OMH scholarship status. I have interviewed with the clinical coordinator and nurse manager on 3rd floor for an RN position. I have also introduced myself to the nurse managers on 2nd and 4th floor and provided them with a hard copy of my resume and cover letter. Strengths and opportunities for this objective are my determination, positive attitude, openness to experience on any unit, and a guaranteed job through my OMH Work Back Scholarship. Possible weaknesses or threats may be other nurses applying for the same positions, inability to successfully pass the ADN program or the NCLEX, or not being persistent enough in my follow-up with the nurse
managers.
To begin the process of obtaining my BSN degree I would need to complete all requires prerequisites for consideration for entry to both UNCW and UNCW-School of Nursing. I would also need to submit an application to both UNCW and UNCW-SON. Finally I would need to successfully complete the RN to BSN program to be considered for graduation and receive my BSN degree. Through my enthusiasm in furthering my education I have already completed all prerequisites for entry into UNCW and UNCW-SON. Additionally I have submitted both applications to UNCW and UNCW-SON; paying all fees and submitting all additional forms. I have been accepted into UNCW, but am awaiting news about UNCW-SON. This program would take about one year to complete. My strengths and opportunities for this objective are my excitement and enthusiasm, early application, strong support system, and diligence in completion of required prerequisite classes. Possible weaknesses or threats may be not getting accepted into UNCW-SON, other students applying to the program (competition), lack of motivation to continue school r/t prolonged enrollment, or inability to balance family life, a full time nursing career as a novice nurse, and a full time class schedule.
Once this is completed I would be able to begin the process of earning a MSN degree. I would need to choose an MSN degree which I would like to purse, find a school that offers that degree, apply to the school, and successfully complete the curriculum for graduation, receiving my MSN degree. This objective is less defined and planned out than my others; this could be seen as a weakness. I see it as a strength because it allows me more flexibility in exploring my likes and dislikes in nursing. I have thought about a career as a Certified Nurse Midwife, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, and as a Nurse Educator. I have even explored my options of educational institutes and required prerequisites. However, I want to be able to explore nursing and find my passion before I commit myself to a specialty. Strengths and opportunities for this objective are my early exploration and research on possible institutions. Possible weaknesses and threats may be a less structured/formulated plan, lack of direction, inability to commit to a specialty, or indecisiveness.
Ultimately I think that I am well on my way to fulfilling my personal mission statement. However my mission statement is a continuous work in progress, it will require reconsideration and revision.
