The relationship between the Europeans and the Africans was unequal. The Europeans thought of the Africans as uncivilized. The Africans had taken over the jobs that the indigenous people had previously been responsible for: serving and working for the Europeans.

The Dutch were interested mostly in trade and viewed Indians as something to be tolerated. In general the Dutch appeared to have little interest in learning about the Indians and their culture. The Dutch never had to question the idea that their culture was richer, stronger, more highly developed, and closer to God than the Indian cultures. The Dutch generally left the Indians alone and they did bother them. The Dutch had little or no interest in forcing religion on the Indians. The Dutch were in the beaver business, so they were only concerned with the Indians who were providing them with beaver pelts. The Dutch viewed the Indians as trading partners and therefore a source of wealth. Most of the Dutch fur traders lacked manners and often attempted to cheat the Indians.
The English colonies first settlement was in Jamestown in 1607. The English mostly forced natives off their lands and they were cruel and justified their cruelty with religious reasons. The English treated the indigenous people as a lower class of people; they believed that the natives stood in their way of land that they thought was rightfully theirs.
