Religion Poisons Everything Pennycook Summary
Pennycook’s statement sounds very defensive against all who practice a religion. He quotes more than a few authors who share the same belief as him. One author who stood to me the most was Hichens (2007) he states, “religion poisons everything” (p.60). On the same page, Pennycook says that his main issue is “to engage with ancient organized religions in their new incarnations, with claims to the existence of an almighty being still, after so much, seems a desperate regression” (p. 60).” If I understood his statement correctly he is saying that unbelievers can shun their claim in believing in the Almighty God, but still show a high degree of respect to others. I will have to say that I disagree with Pennycook’s claim. He has various points in which he cites other sources as evidence to …show more content…
On the contrary, the reason why the rapture has not happen is because of God’s unconditional love and patience. Nandy (2006) states that no one thought or imagined after so many centuries -religion would still be alive. Who would have thought that faith would “emerge from the shadows to occupy center sate of the beginning of the twenty-first century?” (p. 60). Second, Pennycook believes that one set of “beliefs and practices when another seems to be trying to set at the same thing in a slightly different way” is not logical (p. 62). Chamberlain calls these two sets of beliefs as “anti-intellectualism and relativist tautologies” (p.62). Pennycook and Chamberlai’s belief are contrary to what the Bible says. In the Bible, I read that Jesus Christ is the way, the truth and the life. Also, although others are trying to set the same thing, but slightly differently-God tells me in His word that no one can come to the Father except through Jesus Christ. As Christians our belief is to follow Christ’s path and that there is no other way. As for the unbelievers I am not sure what other path they believe is

Common Sense Religion by Daniel Dennett is an argumentative essay. Dennett talks about different people belonging to different religion believe that life is meaningless without a religion. The poor, who can hardly feed themselves, put money in collection plate for the sake of religion and think that they have beautified their life after death. But there is no guarantee if there money is really being used for good (for needy), what if it is not? If this money collection is done through a preacher, does this still remain a filthy work? Every religion thinks that the other one is stumpy. It is equally believed in every religion that the non-believers are totally out of the question and there is no escape for them.…

In the book “Religion in America” by Julia Corbett Hemeyer describes the various roles and feelings people have about religion within the United States. She goes into quite a bit of detail regarding how Americans display their religious beliefs, how they feel about people with different religious backgrounds, in particular after the events of September 11, 2001, and some of the contradictions regarding the leaders of some religious groups. The 1st chapter in the book was about how religion is studied and how people may define it. Basically, in my opinion when it comes to the idea of religion I think everyone generally has the same idea regarding it because if the average person were asked about religion they most likely would mention one…

In modern, evangelical Christianity, the term “rapture” conjures up images of the Christian church being pulled from an earth in turmoil and swept away to Heaven. It is an image that is reminiscent of the “Left Behind” books, a fictional series which depicts a world in which a rapture of all of earth’s Christians has occurred, leaving behind only “sinners” to stare down the end of the world. This view of a “rapture” has become a popular one, and one that remains largely unquestioned by the evangelical Church. This rapture theology is not, however, Biblically founded or supported. In reality, this eschatological perspective is fairly new, and has only been around for about 180 years.…

The author behind the document, John P., works for Tech News World, a company with a trusted reputation. Straight off the back, this makes the document already strong and credible. John P. also uses varies different quotes to support his argument; therefore, making it stronger. In spite of this, John P. fails to credit the sources of the quotes; making the document less credible. Not only is this document overall credible, but also the YouTube video created by Mathew Patrick. Mathew Patrick is a well-known theorist on YouTube and is considered a reliable source. One of the strongest qualities that Mathew Patrick offers is that he sources all data included in the video. This ultimately, substantially increases the credibility of the video due to the fact that it is not often that videos or documents source all of their data. In the end, both documents have great credibility and strength in their…

One of those things is that you don't have to burn books to destroy a culture. I chose this quote because it made me remember about the present, this topic is about religion. I think that everyone should believe in what they want to believe in, and all people should respect that. I think that it's stupid that in general no one should disrespect you or treat you in a brutal manner because you believe in something or read something that someone else doesn't…
