“People say that it can't work, black and white; well here we make it work, every day. We have our disagreements, of course, but before we reach for hate, always, always, we remember the Titans.” Remember the Titans is a movie based on a true story about racism and discrimination. In 1971, the blacks and the whites were forced to integrate schools in Alexandria Virginia. Coach Boone (black male) was hired to replace Coach Yoast (white male) as the head football coach for the High School. The team struggles to become a “team” and is often found fighting each other. It takes a lot of time and effort for the team to get on each other’s side and learn they must stick together if they want to overcome the obstacles they’re facing. The team goes …show more content…
Coach Boone had a wife and two kids, who he loved and protected very much. Coach Yoast had his daughter Sheryl, who was by his side every step of the way. She wanted everything he did and supported him through it all. However, there was also many emotional ties that made characters in Remember the Titans (2000) a family. While Boone was declining the offer to the position as the head coach at T.C. Williams, many people of the black community came to his house and applauded him for becoming the head coach and doing something no one else had done. Boone stated “I’m just a football coach.” They replied with “You’re our coach.” (Remember the Titans, 2000). As Coach Yoast was announcing that he would be taking a year off from coaching, the boys and their fathers tried to get him to change his mind and protested for him to stay. They said if he goes, they go (Remember the Titans, 2000). They didn’t want to play for anyone else besides Coach Yoast. Yoast kept those boys in line and spent a lot of time with them, the boys looked up to him. As they were coming home from winning the regional championship game (Merron) Gerry got in a bad accident and was put in the hospital. In the waiting room were the team and coaches. The saw him as a brother and wanted to be there to make sure he was doing okay and to support him. Julius goes in the room to see Gerry and the nurse says there is only kin the room. Gerry says, “Alice, are you blind? Don’t you see the family resemblance? That’s my brother.” (Remember the Titans, 2000). The relationship Gerry and Julius had been very special. They started out not liking each other, but they soon realized the other wasn’t so bad. After camp ended, the two boys stood up for one another and became emotionally tied to one another. Rather that be; the dumb brother or the goofy dad, it’s always easy to take a shot at them. However there is an issue when it comes to race in these television sitcoms we see today. For example in the hit television show Modern family. It is like the writers purposely make it so that all immigrant women are hot headed, loud, dumb bimbos. I agree they can be loud however for them to purposely make fun of her is wrong. Another example of this is…
