Although it is an inspirational film, the greater messages of tolerance and anti-racism in Remember the Titans are lost in the hype of the Titan’s football victories. To what extent do you agree?
Remember the Titans, directed by Boaz Yakin (2000), is an inspirational film that addresses major issues of tolerance and anti-racism. The film also celebrates success on the football field, however the greater messages explore racism and the friendships that develop as blacks and whites work together to reach a common goal, football victories. Anti-racism is a consistent theme that runs throughout the movie. The movie is set during the 1950’s in the community of Alexandra, a small southern town in the U.S.A. During this time great tension existed between Blacks and Whites. It is within this atmosphere that Blacks and Whites in a college came together to challenge racist attitudes and form friendships. An example of this is shown when the original coach of the titans, Coach Yoast, who is white, has Coach Boone, who is black, over to his house. At the end of their run, they end up at the graveyard of the cold war. When they got there, Coach Boone made an inspirational speech about how the races fought, and how they are still fighting. “If we don’t come together right now…then we will all be destroyed, just like them. I don’t care if you don’t like each other, but you will respect each other.” This quote is a strong, key part of the film that brought the titans together by making them think about how destructive hatred between races is.
