An Investigation To See The Effect That Alcohol Has Upon The Heart Rate Of Daphnia.…
In this lab, the problem was, how do certain types of drugs affect body’s homeostasis. The drugs tested were prescription painkillers and hemp. The hypotheses stated that both drug were depressant drugs thus meaning that heart rate, and along with it, metabolism. The hypotheses are, in fact, true statements that can be backed with the data collected. The initial heart rate before the drug, hemp was applied, was 216 BPM. The final heart rate, with the drug was 132 BPM. That is a change by -84 BPM. This proves that hemp lowered the heart rate of the Daphnia, like the hypothesis stated. The overall average for all the groups, there is a similar trend with a -7% change meaning the every test had the same outcome of the heart rate decreasing. There…
The Oryx is a genus consisting of 4 great antelope species. The Oryx is also called the sabre antelope. Oryx is a speedy-running hoofed animal that lives in dry areas of Africa and Asia (plus the Arabian Peninsula). They live in steppes (sparse grasslands), the semi-deserts, and the deserts.…
For my developmental observation I observed my little cousin, Dilan Meeks. Dilan is a five year old boy. He weighs 42 pounds and is 41 inches tall. In his home setting I observed Dilan for two hours. According to the text of chapter one, Dilan is in the early childhood stage of development.…
On Friday evening, November 17, 1911, three Howard University undergraduate students, with the assistance of their faculty adviser, gave birth to the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. This event occurred in the office of biology Professor Ernest E. Just, the faculty adviser, in the Science Hall (now known as Thirkield Hall). The three liberal arts students were Edgar A. Love, Oscar J. Cooper and Frank Coleman. From the initials of the Greek phrase meaning "friendship is essential to the soul," the name Omega Psi Phi was derived. The phrase was selected as the motto. Manhood, scholarship, perseverance and uplift were adopted as cardinal principles. A decision was made regarding the design for the pin and emblem,…

The didgeridoo is a long wooden instrument found in Australia. It originated by first nation Australians. The didgeridoo is very common to the Tuba. They both can create low deep sounds. The didgeridoo can be found in many festivals across Australia such as in the Garma festival and many more. The didgeridoo can be found in many native Australian cultures. In a Dreamtime story, the didgeridoo is said to have been played by one of the three gods. Once the playing and the singing is complete than the world is also created. They even mention the didgeridoo as being a device indirectly created by god. The didgeridoo is used in many indigenous Australian ceremonies. A modern didgeridoo can be up to three to ten feet long. The didgeridoo is…
The Daphnia magna, more commonly known as water flea, is indigenous to ponds and lakes in northern and western North America. This crustacean has an outer transparent covering called the carapace. The unique physiology of the water flea is useful in translational research allowing researchers to visibly study all of the bodily systems without causing harm to the specimen (2). Being classified as an indicator species, the Daphnia magna are extremely sensitive to changes to their marine environment, sometimes showing biological symptoms in response to toxicity exposure. (1). In this experiment, three Daphnia magna were treated with three different drugs to measure the change in their short-term cardiac function; ethanol, caffeine and nicotine. Ethanol, found in drinking alcohol is a…
Major Films Three Faces of Eve and A Beautiful Mind involve psychological disorders, disorders that aren’t particularly common. Both films portray disorders from their main characters. Schizophrenia from A Beautiful Mind, and DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) from Three Faces of Eve tell the story of a charcter living with the disorder. Although both disorders are commonly confused, DID and schizophrenia differentiate in symptoms and effects on daily life. Even medication effects can differ between the disorders.…
Both paraphimosis and phimosis are medical urologic conditions that can occur in the male cat. Paraphimosis is the inability for a cat to retract its penis back into its sheath. The condition typically occurs following an erection. Phimosis is a medical condition that occurs when the cat isn't able to protrude its penis from its sheath, which can cause problems with urination and breeding.…
Diprosopus is also known as craniofacial duplication, or two face. There is also a term for it called Craniofacial Duplication this is a very rare disorder where parts or all of the face is duplicated. Some people call it twinning, but this can be a very dangerous situation for it is two people in one body. This happens when abnormal activity happens with the protein SHH (Sonic Hedgehog). SHH is a gene has a important role to be able to signal facial issues during development. Diprosopus is the syndrome that causes facial structures to duplicate; often the face is mirrored to the other side.…
Daphnia are cold-blooded poikilotherms that rely on heat from the surrounding water to maintain their body temperature. An increase in the water temperature should equate to an increase in metabolic activity due to enzymes working at a temperature closer to their optimum level. However, once the optimum temperature has been exceeded, the enzymes will begin to denature. Hydrogen bonds, which keep the protein conformation, begin to break, causing a change in shape of the active site; substrates can no longer be catalysed, resulting in a dramatic slowing of cellular metabolism. Faster heart contractions pump more nutrient-carrying hemolymph to the Daphnia's organs, tissues and cells, meeting the increasing demand for energy, in the form of ATP, needed for cellular respiration, movement and the building of body mass. When the surrounding water temperature decreases, a falling heart rate should be seen as enzyme activity slows down. The translucent exoskeleton of the Daphnia will allow heart contractions to be seen and counted when viewed through a light microscope. Using this information will allow the correlation between temperature and heart rate to be examined. (Background information on Daphnia) (Deken)…

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that helps manage the brain’s pleasure and reward centers. It regulates movement and emotional responses. It also lets us to not only see rewards but take action to move toward them. For example, rats with more dopamine climbed up a fence for larger amounts of food while rats with less chose to go for food nearby. Dopamine is believed to have a role in memory formation and the onset of addictive behaviors. It is involved with learning, emotional arousal, and…
In the early hours on the night of 13 February 2013, from a secured complex known as Silver Woods Country Estate in the district of Pretoria, Dr. Stipp, a medical practitioner, and Mr. Stander heard gunshots and screams for help. They entered to the house and found Oscar Leonard Carl Pistorius, the Olympic and Paralympic Games athlete that had represented South Africa on 2012, kneeling alongside a 29 year old model, Miss Reeva Steenkamp, who was lying on the floor at the foot of the stairs leading to the sleeping quarters of the house. Pistorius and Steenkamp met on the 4th of November of 2012 by a mutual friend and started a romance. Steenkamp had been shot four times with a 9mm pistol and was found already dead. Oscar had carried Reeva from…
