Quantitative Assignment 1 The Drake Equation is used to estimate the number of civilizations in the universe. It is more of a tool to use and help us understand and figure out how many worlds are out there. Each of the terms are being multiply to get the outcome for N, which is the number of civilizations in The Milky Way Galaxy whose electromagnetice missions are detectable.
According to SETI website, the Drake Equation values R*,fp, ne, fl, fi, fc, L are defined as the following. In the first part of the equation is R*. It represent the 7 new stars forming annually in a year. According to NASA, they reported about new stars forming, "The team found and confirmed aluminum-26 is found primarily in star forming regions throughout the galaxy and each year our galaxy creates on average about seven new stars." The next value is fp, this represents the fraction of those stars per planetary systems. There is 0.5 suitable planet per 1 star of planetary system. After all, there maybe stars exist around habitable planets, this show that in our galaxy, the number of habitable planets can even be higher as stated by NASA. The final four factors of the Drake Equation is fl and it is the fraction of suitable planets on which simple life actually appears. This serve as 1 because of 1 to 1 ratio of planet with life and suitable planet. Earth is the only planet we know that there is life but this value have us think about that the fact there can be another life arising, this is still contemplating among us. The fi is for the fraction of life bearing planets on which intelligent life emerges. There is 1 × 10^-11 planetary system with intelligent life per 1 planet.
