If colleges were to pay athletes there would be no fair way to distribute the money. Athletes perform their sport at different levels of ability and for various lengths of time. In addition, not every player is able to compete in a game. Problems would arise about the athlete not playing which would not allow for him/her to receive the money they deserve. The first issue about this problem is that some people believe that athletes should be paid based on an open market system. This idea of an open market system would allow for supply and demand to come into play. In addition, a school would be able to pay their scouted athlete based on the money that comes in because of their ability. However, The payment would vary depending on the market along with the deals that each athlete has with the school. The second issue is about the colleges because not every college can afford the players they want to recruit. In 2013 the NCAA had an investigation on the economic stability of Division 1 sport programs. This study showed that out of 288 Division 1 schools only 23 were running their programs in a profitable way. This means that only those 23 schools had the money to pay a college athlete. In our society, any business not profiting from anything is likely not hiring, and there is no idea…

I agree with what you have stated about athletes not recieving the education they deserve. According to Petrie, this is because athletes are more pampered in their academic work, and many responsibilities are taken off of athletes (p.32, paragraph 6). However, colleges bribe to athletes about coming to their universities to get a sufficient and proper education but never keep their promise. Instead, they manipulate athletes and make it hard for them to graduate by the end of their college lives (p.34, paragraph 18). As you have mentioned, Petrie does want his athletes to have a suitable education. On page 33 in paragraph 9, Petrie remarks, "It is sad to see bright young athletes knowingly compromise their potential and settle for…

Why should college athletes be paid to participate in their sports? College athletes are awarded tuition free college due to their hard work and athletic abilities, why should they get paid extra money outside of their tuition being paid? Student athletes in college only have two jobs while they are attending, to learn and become a better and smarter athlete. These student athletes don’t need extra money outside of having their tuition, room and board, and food paid for. They are also given clothing which takes away another money based need. These student athletes are given much more than other students and yet they still believe that they should be paid for their extra work outside of their performances. The main reason is because they are already paid through their scholarships to go to school and play sports. Other reasons to this opinion is to maintain their amatuer status, difficult…

Many people believe there is no need for an education because of the money that is made by professional athletes. They are indeed right. The average athlete earns an annual salary of $3.3million. The problems are that many professional athlete are either bankrupt or in jail, mostly because of impulse control disorders that cause millions of dollars to disappear. Should college athletes be paid actual cash for their contribution to the sport they participate in? Now I know a lot of people would argue that, “athletes do get paid, in scholarships”, but what about the big time D1 athletes that have their jersey’s being sold and being put on magazine covers? I mean some of these athletes we hear about daily are being publicized like celebrities. In Division 1 sports the big time conferences and schools have big time athletes that bring the universities they are playing for tons of money with their effort and time spend contributing to the athletic program they are partaking in. It’s hard enough to have a job as just a student, but being a student athlete there really is no time for extra money, which makes it very hard to live. I think this is where and why some programs pay players under the table, but being an athlete is a full time job and some kids have to support a family. I think if the NCAA could pay the athletes a bare minimum amount of money it would make that much of a difference.…

In 2014, the NCAA had a gross revenue of about one billion dollars, distributing 547.1 million dollars to D1 schools. The money that D1 schools rake in from athletics is about 79% of their total income per year and helps them improve their respective school in academics, extracurricular activities, research, clubs and societies, and a multitude of other areas. Unfortunately, the athletes that bring in all this money receive absolutely no revenue and are essentially treated like slaves so that the school can prosper. Even though many people would argue that athletes should play the sport for the love of the game, their commitment, sacrifice of education, and risk of injury or permanent damage suggest they should get some compensation for their performance.…

Hundreds of Millions of dollars all around the world are being used to pay our athletes. My question is should they be paid this astronomical amount of money. Certain athletes earn millions while various people all around the world can barely afford the necessities, such as food, water and shelter. This is a problem that desperately needs to be addressed. To achieve this we should employ taxes, but the money made off this should go to charity, also we should lower salary caps, thus we restrict the amounts teams can spend on their players. In this report, I will be explaining why athletes should be paid less…

The article “Do Professional Athletes get Paid too much Money” is written by Mihir Bhagat a senior analyst. Bhagat believes professional athletes make too much money. The article then lists some of the other workers that are paid less than professional athletes such as firefighters, police officers, military workers, and doctors. At the college level, high school phenoms are treasured to bring money into their collegiate programs – a Heisman Trophy winner can bring impressive funding into a football program. On the other hand, Roberto Hinojosa, a high school math teacher, disagrees with that statement. Roberto believes professional athletes are overpaid as compared to the salaries of public service workers, such as police officers, fire fighters, and teachers. Individuals such as these lay their lives on the line daily, and teachers motivate students towards higher learning as well as guiding willing students towards helping themselves to acquire the knowledge they need to know to become productive adults. All of these public servants are paid a great deal less, over the life span of their career. Salaries for a teacher average $50,950 a year, a police officer, $50, 512 per year, and a lead firefighter, $57,000 per year, as compared to a football player earning $32.4 million per year.…
