Wood ducks are an amazing species of duck. Not only are they covered in bright colors, but their life history is unbelievable as well. They are one of the most stunning waterfowl you will come across. They are small ducks wth a length of 47-54 centimeters. They have boxy heads ornamented with beautiful crests. Their necks are thin. The males’ bright coloring is beautiful. Their bodies are an iridescent chestnut and green with decorated with elaborate patterns. They have blueish-black backs, glossy green heads, bright red eyes and bills, chestnut breasts, and buffy sides1. The females are not nearly as brightly colored as the males are, but they are still vey beautiful. They are a gray-brown with some blue feathers as well. They have white speckled breasts, white stomachs, gray bills, and have delicate white patterns around their eyes. Wood ducks have been created to swim in the water like all ducks- but have also been made for the woods. They have broad wings for flying among the dense trees, long broad tails for balance, large eyes to help see in the dark forests, and sharp claws on their webbed feet to allow them to perch on tree branches like songbirds.
