Religion has always had a powerful effect on nations, even more so than the military or the political system in which the civilization confides in. Although they had many gods, the titans are a classification that they had believed to create the universe and all its correspondings. (Plato) In total there were twelve titans that ruled in Greek mythology, all of whom were the offspring of Ouranos and Gaea. Ouranos was created by Gaea, and was ruler of all the skies. He imprisoned his children inside of Gaea’s earth womb out of fear that they would rebel against him. Gaea was the primeval divinity of earth. She was thought of as the mother of the world as we know it, creating the mountains, oceans, and skies; she is often portrayed as a mother figure and usually portrayed in a green color to represent the earth.
The first generation of titans consisted of Kronos, Rhea, Iapetus, Oceanus, Hyperion, Themis, Thea, Mnemosyne, Phoebe, Coeus, Tethys, and Crius. To the ancient Greeks, all of these played a vital part in their world, each titan having his or her own responsibility. These not only had a responsibility to keep the world as it was, but to also help protect the Greeks.
