The Korean entertainment industry for a long time studied and understood the concept of soft power and its uses on the world stage. They knew the only way to penetrate an American cultured global concept of the entertainment market is not by riding against the tidal wave of US cultural imperialism, but to adopt it. And today, in the soft power stage, K-pop is considered to be South Korea’s most powerful weapon on the world stage. 73% of teens in America listen to popular music, which is also known as ‘pop’ music (Murray). There are so many different music genres in the world and it’s amazing how pop music can capture 73 percent of the teen’s attention. Pop music offers an endless variety of styles and meanings to the listening audience. Although I listen to many other music genres, I listen to pop music a lot more often. And there are reasons why 73 percent of other teens do too. Pop music is such a diverse genre that you will rarely ever hear the same message sung in different ways. Other genres like hip-hop will focus on the topics of money, sex, and “starting from the bottom.” Music genres like that is all the same just put into different words every…

My friend, Ruby, who is Chinese-American, introduced me to K-pop back when we were in our Freshman year of high school. The music was different than American pop music, and the rhythm of it suited my taste, therefore Ruby and I bonded over the music, but neither of us had any idea what the artist was saying. Also, because we were in to K-pop, we picked up a few words and phrases of Korean and would teach it to our other friends, who could care less about it. This lead us two Asian-Americans to grow closer during our four years of high school because the music brought us together. I also met people back at York County Community College who also enjoyed K-pop music, and we would always recommend each other different songs by different…

Nowadays, rap is one of the most popular music genres to people around the world especially teenagers and also quickly increasing through music industry for decades. This kind of music was began by African-American in the early 1970’s and composed to tell or reveal one’s experiences by using alliteration. Although rap history was just started, its influence is now powerful and widespread as same as fast food trend. Moreover, for teenagers, it is a kind of music to dance and party due to intense rhythm of the beat, simple and strong word rhymes. They think that listening to this trendy kind of music can give them an enjoyable and pleasing time. Nevertheless, in my point of view, there are several reasons to believe that rap music can cause a lot of disadvantages to teenagers.…

Due to the development of globalisation, “a global culture was seen as being formed through the economic and political domination of the United States which thrust its hegemonic culture into all parts of the world” (Featherstone, 1995, p87). As well as economic change, culture change is heavily influenced by globalisation. Culture can be generally defined as the way of life of a people, it refers to the socially learned behaviours, beliefs, and values that the member of a group or society share. (Ess and Sudweeks, 2001, p88). For example, form Starbucks to MacDonalds, American life style is influencing individuals all around the world in different ways. The evidence of these affects includes the expansion of Hollywood film, fast food and hip-hop music in many countries. The influence of globalisation on music is significant in China, especially for youth music. For instance, English words are used commonly in Chinese pop songs and Chinese rock and roll bands are developing; the music styles of hip-hop and R&B have been adopted into Chinese pop songs and have achieved success. In the first part of this essay, I will define the concept of globalization and then go on to discuss it in relation to the change of music by globalisation in China through three aspects: the development of accessibility to music in China; the growth of music variety; the development of multi-national record corporations and international cooperation between recording companies; and the influence of music piracy in China. Since the 1980s, the structure of Chinese music (mainland China) has changed dramatically. Due to the change and development of policies, different types of music were allowed to the public. Pop music especially from Hongkong and Taiwan became popular in mainland China very rapidly. The popularity of songs for the…

Comparative Study of K-Pop and OPM. Cervantes (2015) interviewed eight (8) K-Pop fans and eight (8) OPM fans and surveyed 200 K-Pop fans and 200 OPM fans residing in Metro Manila. The study found out that: (1) Fans of K-Pop knew the genre because of peer influence and used the internet to be familiar with the artists. On the other hand, OPM fans got to know their artists because of radio exploitation, performing, and publicity. (2) Language is not considered a barrier. In the case of VisPop artists, it would be feasible for them to adopt the strategies used to promote K-Pop. Still, both fans prefer a language that they can easily understand and can relate with; (3) Talent is the main point of the fans’ interest in artists. Therefore VisPop…
