INTRODUCTION: Everybody loves the company of a good, well-behaved pet. It is reported, though, that approximately 8 million strays and unwanted pets are taken to shelters, such as the Humane Society. Tragically, nearly half of these animals will be put to death. Euthanasia is the leading cause of death for both dogs and cats in the United States. The overpopulation of animals has become a big problem.
SUPPORT (subpoints): One of the biggest contributing factors to overpopulation is not sterilizing your pet.
1. Sterilizing your pet has great health benefits.
2. Pets that have been sterilized often have better temperaments.
3. A pet that has been spayed or neutered will have better social skills, which will make handling your pet easier and more pleasant.
OBJECTIONS (the other side):
1. Owning a purebred can make you money by breeding.
2. It’s un-natural to do surgery if not medically necessary.
3. I want my dog for protection, so social skills are un-necessary.
REPLY TO OBJECTIONS: It is thought that the cost of spaying or neutering is too much. In my opinion, it’s far less expensive than what it costs to care for just one animal on death row in the pound. Medically it has been proven to prevent testicular cancer in males and uterine or mammary tumors in females. Over use or under use of these organs are the contributing factors. The thought of having a cute puppy or a purebred, is the perfect reason to create more. What is not thought about is that there is so much more to breeding than just having a cute male and female. When the litters don’t sell, they are given away. When an animal can’t be given away, they are set free or taken to an animal shelter.
