We are able to learn that although his years in slavery were not unbearable, that there were still problems and instances where he and his family were mistreated and assaulted. This letter shows us that not all slaves were left to suffer after they gained their freedom and that some families, including Jourdon Anderson's, had managed to maintain a good religious and family mindset even through all of the hardships they faced. We are able to see that African Americans were able to at least somewhat overcome their past and make a better future for themselves. Jourdon and his wife were a great example of a family that continued looking forward and working towards a better life for their…

TLO argued that her Fourth Amendment rights were violated, but why? In 1984, a teacher found two girls in the New Jersey school bathroom smoking cigarettes. They were then sent to the principal's office for interrogation. Immediately the second girl admitted to this crime, but TLO held her own. TLO was a 14-year-old girl named Tracy Lois Odem, she remained anonymous until recently. The principal, Ted Choplick, demanded that he searches her purse. Choplick found rolls, paraphernalia-marijuana, money, a list of names, and a box of cigarettes, he then excluded the contents. After being arrested TLO said due to the Fourth Amendment, stating “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized”, that Choplick invaded her privacy, which is unconstitutional…

The proponents for the right to die to be legalized gain many insights by “winning” this argument. They win autonomy to make their own decisions. These proponents, by winning, would experience less harm and pain in their lives and others. Closure can be found in the fact that yourself, family member, or friend would be able to escape the pain and suffering that comes along with terminal illnesses. In winning, advocates gain support from the government in the sense that they are given the right to choose and the government backs that decision.…

Known for his tales of mystery and horror, Edgar Allan Poe published Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque, which included one of his major works, “Ligeia.” While he is better known for some of his other works, such as “The Raven,” Poe has once been quoted as saying that “Ligeia” was his best story that has been written. With this work, Poe is able to both show and answer that the only reason that people die in the first place is due to them not trying to stay alive enough and that love becomes the one ability to truly revive a dead body.…

Sexual thoughts pop in and out of most people’s mind, but especially teenagers, and there’s nothing they can do about it. It is normal for teenage boys and girls to experience this, more than ever when they are hitting puberty. The hormones in the body begin to act up and teenagers want to experience other things on their own. Males begin to grow pubic and facial hairs, and their voice starts to deepen, while girls’ breasts begin to develop and their body begins to take shape. After hitting puberty, teenagers are now at the point where they want to experience things. ‚Don’t go out there and get pregnant‛ a mother explains, ‚you’re too young and I don’t think you’re ready to be a mother.‛ Likewise for a father, ‚Don’t get no girl pregnant and have a child you can’t even take care of.‛ However, that’s the only serious conversation parents ever have with their children about serious matters such as adolescence. They do not speak about the deeper things that teenagers need to be informed about and as a result teenagers will have to find out on their own. They will dwell on the things they have learnt, some even begin to have perverted thoughts and most teenagers want to experiment and put them into practice later on in life -- but where are the parents, where are the pastors, the counselors, all the essential people when it comes to issues such as these? Adults want to tell the younger children that sex is wrong at a young age, but don’t go into the deeper things such as masturbation or even internet pornography. The older folks want to say that the younger generation is corrupted, but never have they really sat down with a young man and mention things such as lust of the mind, and the same for girls. Adults are the cause of the perversion in the minds of their own children. Teenagers and even the younger children hear about pornography from their…

As of November 20, 2014, same –sex marriage has been legalized in 35 out of 50 U.S. states. Same-sex marriage is a hot topic which the Supreme Court is considering to legalize. Many people say a homosexual person is a sinner. The question is do homosexual people choose his or her gender? They were born that way and they are happy with their lives. Homosexual people are nothing unlike heterosexual people. They are living, they are working, and they contribute to society. Proponents state that same-sex couples should have access to the same marriage benefits and public acknowledgment enjoyed by heterosexual couples and that prohibiting gay marriage is unconstitutional discrimination. On the other side, opponents argue that altering the traditional definition of marriage as between a man and a woman will further weaken a threatened institution and that legalizing gay marriage is a slippery downhill way that may lead to polygamous and interspecies marriages (gaymarriage.procon.org). All people in the world should understand the meaning of marriage, whether a same-sex marriage or a traditional marriage. For that reason, same-sex marriage should be considered as a legal marriage because it is an equal right for humankind and beneficial for society as well as preventing youth suicide.…

The prices of college tuition have increased yearly, and not much of an effort is put forth to try to lower the costs. For example, colleges in the state of Pennsylvania have a high tuition. Moravian College’s tuition is about $32,931, and after receipt of grants and scholarships for one year it will be $22,900. East Stroudsburg University’s tuition is about $6,240, and after receipt of grants and scholarships for one year it will be $12,500. I can barely afford Community College, and I know for a fact I wouldn’t be able to afford any of these colleges or universities either. In this essay, I will explain through facts and opinions, why the cost of college tuition should be lowered.…

This was indeed something I had thought to myself over and over again. I didn't have an immediate answer to this, but when I did develop one, it was out of the kindness and empathy from my heart. By nature, I tend to be a sensitive person. But as bitter as this sounds, one should never let his or her emotions cloud his or her reason because this result in unfavorable and regrettable consequences. There are sacrifices that have to be made, and in this debate, you must chose one side or the other. Whether the other side establishes themselves as the victorious Allied powers and ourselves as the pressuring Nazi's that want to send those deemed unwanted away, is up to their own interpretation and point of view. Just recently, a massive group of individuals have established refuge here in our neighborhood due to a decline in the economy. As a community that treats others with respect and dignity, we feel that…

The United States sent men, women, and helicopters to rescue civilians during the Haiti earthquake. This brings the question if America can spend all of this money and manpower on countries, how come the government does not help the homeless individuals inside their own borders. An unjust situation is the amount of homeless men, women, and children in the United States of America. One may think that shelters are keeping homeless people out of the streets and solving the problem, that is not the case. While they do keep homeless people out of the streets there is a successful and less expensive way. That way is long term housing, and there are multiple kinds of long term-housing.…
