Title: Soul surfer
Text type: movie/audio
Date: 9-2-14
13 year-old Bethany Hamilton is a champion surfer who was born to be in the water. But after a fun night out night surfing and what should be a fun day in the water, she is attacked by a shark and loses her arm. Rushed to the hospital, she remains calm, and maintains her faith in God. Now she has to re-learn how to do everything with only one arm - including how to surf. It will take her friends, family, and her Christian faith to get her back into the water, but if that is where she is meant to be, she will find a way to get there.
An interesting idea that this text made me think about was that just because Bethany doesn’t have both arms doesn’t mean she can’t surf and follow her dreams. The author seemed to be suggesting that you shouldn’t give up and in every dream you take three steps forward and one step back but eventually you will reach your goal or dream if you persevere. We see this in the text when Bethany loses her arm in a shark attack but is still determined to become a pro surfer, which she does. I think this is great and that she is a huge inspiration to everyone. Because in our world today people give up easily because they can’t be bothered or have had enough. But this movie changes that, and makes people want to chase their dreams and complete their goals.
Overall, this text by watching this movie I have learned that when chasing my dreams, I shouldn’t give up and instead just look forward to the future because “ life is like surfing, if you get caught in the impact zone, you’ve got to get back up because you never know what may be over the next wave”.

Through her story of faith, persistence, and confidence, Bethany Hamilton has illustrated to millions how to strive for the seemingly unachievable. At the mere age of thirteen, Hamilton experienced something life changing: having an arm bitten off by a shark while surfing. Surfing had always meant the world to Bethany, in fact, her career as a surfer was primarily initiated because of her parents (Hamilton 7). From the moment Hamilton reaches the board, an inexplicable connection sparks. Bethany said “I’ve tried to explain why I feel the way I do and it's impossible. Only surfers get it: the rush, the addiction, the way it stirs your heart, plays with your head, and tortures your body (Hamilton 119) .” Although at times there were downsides, being the youngest of three and the only girl had its benefits. She always engaged in similar activities and the outcome was that she learned to be very ambitious and was always driven to be the…

We learn that while Randy did everything in his power to achieve all of his childhood dreams, not everything was accomplished. We learn the power of failing and how that can also help achieve your dreams. We learn that sometimes your dreams do not come true but may lead you to something you may not have realized you wanted in the first place. The theme of his lecture was about how having childhood dreams and the road to achieve these dreams may be blocked by “brick walls” (cmu.edu) but teaches that “brick walls are there for a reason, they let us prove how badly we want things”. (cmu.edu) That is one of many inspirational quotes given by Randy in his 75 minute lecture.…

Kook by Peter Heller, is a memoir he wrote about how he come to discover his love and passion for surfing . One of the paragraphs that give the most insight to the reader is the last paragraph of the first chapter. In this one particular chapter all the small moments that he talking about he is foreshadowing to the bigger moments that he had later on in his surfing career. While ‘reading between the lines’ the reader can see the tone and purpose that Heller is trying to portray. At the beginning of the first sentence he says “In the split second it took to attempt the most crucial move in surfing….” Here he is giving insight to what the climax of his surfing career felt like. Those split seconds that he is talking about took him not physically but mentally a took while to finally figure it out what surfing is really about—that adrenaline ‘high’ that you get after catching one of the best waves of your life! The next part talks about his transition from traveling across the country in search of an office job to finally taking control of his life. He represents that in how he is waiting for a wave but not looking for one to finally taking control of his life by “…standing [on the surfboard] and in control.” When he was up on that wave, it’s a symbol of him standing up against his old and boring ways of life. When he had caught that wave he then writes about the two thought that he had: “anything is possible” and “What the hell am I doing here”. The first thought he is referring to the moment that he had been working for his entire surfing career, when he got in the tube of the wave. The second thought that he had is referring to when he got sent to the E.R after a terrible surfing accident after…

Bethany decided to surf at Tunnels Beach, Hawaii, even though the waves were not a real challenge for her. As Hamilton lay on her surfboard waiting for a wave with her left arm hanging from the side, a tiger shark attacked her without any warning. It took a seventeen inch wide bite out of the surf board and her arm. In the ferocious fight for her life, the shark tore her entire arm off just below her shoulder before vanishing. Hamilton quickly swam to shore only using her remaining arm and Blanchard’s father used a surf leash as a tourniquet to help stop her from bleeding to death before she was rushed to a nearby hospital. This incident seemed to end Hamilton’s goal of being the greatest woman surfer and it almost ended her life. She had lost almost 70% of her blood that morning, but she didn’t give up the fight to…

Good vs. evil is a widely explored theme in Isobelle Carmody's novel 'The Gathering'. It is most evident in the battle between the Chain and the Kraken, however the more sinister, subtler acts of evil occur when he attempts to make each member vulnerable by breaching their weaknesses. While the physical examples such as the final battle, the murder of The Tod and the violent acts by Buddha and his gang could certainly be classified as evil, it is my belief that the brainwashing of the students and the fanatical powers of illusion Mr. Karle wields are more insidious, swiftly inhabiting and manifesting in the minds of people in a way that is more powerful than any outright acts of violence.…

When I was younger I thought that I would enjoy Field of Dreams (Robinson, Kinsella, 1989) because it was a baseball movie. I remember watching it and not liking it because baseball was secondary to the actual plot. Since I was so young I never caught the actual meaning of the movie or what lesson it was trying to portray. This movie is about second chances, and having a dream that you feel is lost. It is also about having faith in your dreams even if they seem unreachable. The power of belief is what makes dreams come true. It doesn't matter how long it takes, "if you build it they will come."…

Humphrys so troubled by the fact that the Oxford English Dictionary has removed the hyphen from thousands of words because he think that the author is trying to adapt to the new generation of writing as what he called fashion. Like shortening the word or using abbreviation as many people use on email and SMS. He thinks that this makes people care less in proper spelling and grammar. The reason for this change is because we are changing the way we communicate with each other and how our life is very busy therefore we need to make everything go faster. Humphrys think texters have changed the English language by using abbreviation for example; laugh out loud would be LOL, and also by using emoticon. He feels that text-speak is a bad thing because it's “ravaging” our English language. Even for him texting has made him slipping into sloppy habits, abandoning capital letters and using rows of dots.…

My first reaction to An American childhood was a lot like my own memories when I was a child. I have vivid memories of throwing snowballs at cars driving by, playing football, and hanging with the boys. I related to Annie Dillard more than any author I have ever read. Dillard was not the average type of girl growing up and neither was I. I’m sure though that this relates to many children when growing up and not having a care in the world. She was much more adventurous in many ways along like me. Dillard is very creative with her writing and uses many phrases to describe objects or surroundings such as “a perfect iceball, from perfectly white snow, perfecting spherical, and squeezed perfecting translucent so no snow remained all the way through. She uses these descripted words to lead up to what is about to happen.…
