Abstract
Structured Management Education started in India in 1960s, with the establishment of Indian Institute of Management Calcutta and Ahmedabad in collaboration with MIT Sloan and Harvard Business School, USA respectively. Management Education as a discipline has grown tremendously over past five decades in India and has reached a level where its’ offshoots and specializations are becoming individual disciplines. However, given the interdisciplinary nature of Management Education and it coming under the umbrella of Technical and Professional Education there is a need to examine its role and responsibility in society.
It may be prudent enough to revisit the purpose of management education, its initiation as a discipline and growth over the years to understand whether it has played the role that it was envisaged with and whether globalization has an impact on it as a discipline of study and what should constitute Responsible Management Education in today’s era of Borderless economies. 1. Introduction
After independence as India moved from an agrarian to an industrial and manufacturing base there emerged a need for professionally equipped manpower for various production and managerial jobs. The complexities of business placed a demand for managers with in-depth knowledge across functions to smoothly conduct day to day business. With the opening up of borders in 1991 and increase in contribution from services sector, there is now a need for managers with service orientation to compete for market share and survival along with their professional skills and knowledge.
