Background Information
The “This is Getting Old” commercial, released in 2018 by ETrade, marketed investing in retirement before you are incapable of working.
Persuasive Techniques
Targeting young to middle-aged adults, due to the fact that the seniors are working in youthful environments, E-Trade claims Americans should open a retirement account because they need the money so they do not have to work when they are old. The inference is the seniors did not begin saving early enough in life to have funds for retirement. For example, they emphasize that over ⅓ of Americans have no retirement savings, therefore making it hard to retire when they are older. Logically the seniors, who are in their mid eighties, are incapable of performing the jobs illustrated in the commercial, and the emotional appeal in this ad contains both humor and empathy towards the seniors who must continue to work. This leads the audience to the logical conclusion to prepare for retirement.
Logical Fallacies
The logical fallacy in this commercial is appealing to emotion and plain folks. This advertisement uses humor and everyday seniors doing many different jobs. However, we do not know why they have not retired. For example, they may have saved for retirement, but enjoy working.
Visual Elements
The age of the seniors is eighty-five years old, but the other people appear to be in their thirties and forties. There were only black and white races presented in this commercial and most were males. The people in the commercial appeared to have had successful careers in the past due to the fact that they wore nice clothes, fancy jewelry, and looked classy. However, they choose that lifestyle over investing. Most people in the background, are younger and appear to be successful. It' is going to end up in the toilet, I am sorry for being that open. I think this advertisement I s a counterexample of the usual ads that Bordo describes in her essay. Look at the woman! She's definitely not a model. Honestly, when I took a look at this ad, I got scared. My goodness: horribly wrinkly old lady with blue hair!
