Sir Richard Branson is not only an innovative businessman, but also leads by having a rich professional and personal life. Branson is the founder and chairman of the virgin group, a great and innovative conglomerate.
Branson started his business career by dropping out of boarding school, at the age of 16, in order to grow his student magazine business. At his young age he was persuasive enough to get enough advertisement to give out the magazine for free. Branson later took the risk of opening a mail order record business to help fund his magazine. The business performed modestly and allowed Branson to open a record shop.
Branson saw the music industry booming during the 70’s and opened his own recording company. He would sign many artists that other companies turned away and Branson was able to make them big successes. Such artists include Culture Club, the Rolling Stones, and Genesis. With this new financial boom Branson sought even more expansion of his company and started an airline and a store chain. Virgin would start expanding only into locations they know would be successful. Most expansions were in Britain, Australia, the US, and other; places with very similar culture which would not hinder sales.
The Virgin Group would start to see financial hardship, in 1992, and Branson spent much of his money just to keep it financially afloat. Branson cared for his company a lot and it is said that, when he sold the company, he cried when he signed the contract.
Virgin continues to move towards a policy of helping each other not only in the company, but as citizens of the world as a whole. Branson is very connected with his organization’s wants and needs and tries to cater to them. Branson wants Virgin to grow not only as a company but as a driving force in the community.
