This book is a fictional story. It is not directly based on a particular part during the war, but a similar story very well could have happened. When the movie was released in 1999, the title of the book was changed to Ride with the Devil. This movie is very accurate to the book. The story line is very similar and does not vary too much. Jake Roedel is sixteen in the book, as opposed to nineteen in the movie. One famous quote from both the book and movie is “It ain't right, and it ain't wrong. Though this film does not show everything that happened during the American Civil War, the portions of history it did portray were accurate. This movie could be used for a learning tool, but it should not be the only piece of information given to explain the entire era of the American Civil War. This movie only covers the Kansas- Missouri border and mainly only represents what the southerners went through. I did not know what the terms “Jayhawkers” and “Bushwhackers” pertained to, but I had heard the terms used prior to watching this movie. I found it to be a good movie and I would recommend this film to someone interested in a fictional story about the American Civil War along the Kansas- Missouri border.
