The Devils Arithmetic is a young adult fiction novel that has many fascinating elements. The story could be a great tool introducing young readers to the Holocaust. The book both differs yet shares some similarities to other holocaust novels. The story has a strange change of setting early in the story. There are many characters and they all have traits that reflect those who actually experience the Holocaust and the Nazi's acts against humanity. The story begins with a young Jewish girl, Hannah Stern, her parents and brother Aaron going to visit some relatives to celebrate the Passover Seder. Hannah has no interested in going to visit her older relatives and feels unconformable by her Grandpa Will stories of the concentration camps of the
This is another reason I do not think I would want to use this novel in a classroom . He attitude took me put of the story in the beginning. She seems hateful and rude and at first is not a good window to view the Holocaust. The passage that takes palce in car on the way to the Passover dinner revels how self centered she is. The only thing that saved the story was the many other fascinating characters. For example Rivla and the Nazi guard really made me feel like I knew how life in the concentration camps would have been. The fictional novel The Devils Arithmetic is a wonderful novel and was written very well. it maybe a good way of introducing the holocaust to some students but, I would not want to use it in my classroom. The setting of the story is interesting but I believe may confuse some readers. I enjoyed most of the characters but Hannah's personalty was not appropriate way of introducing such a tragic event to students. I enjoyed the book and its themes of learning about the past but I do not think an educator should use it in his or here
