The Movie and book Devil’s Arithmetic, both stories have things in common and both stories have things that are different. The Journey of Hannah and the Holocaust, is thrilling and terrifying, This book leaves you wanting to know more about the tragic days in the camps. In the movie Hannah is transported back in time just like in the book, to where she lands back in the holocaust. Hannah goes to the camp and meets Rivka, who is her loyal friend who stays by her side until the end. But one difference is that in the beginning of the movie Hannah assembles with Rivka instead of Gitl. Also in the book Hannah gets called Chaya, which means life, while in the movie they still call her Hannah.
Tzipporah and Reuven are not even in the movie, however they play a part in the book. Their father isn’t in the movie either. In both the movie and the book Shmuel and his wife die, but they don't die in the same way, instead of getting shot like in the book, Shmuel gets hanged. In the book Hannah saves a baby by garnering up everyone and running into the midden, but in the movie the baby dies along with its mother, the baby for being born and pronounced, and the mother for having the baby. Also, there is no midden. In the book it doesn’t say anything about Rivka being sick, but in the movie that’s how Hannah trades places with her, when the soldiers hear Rivka
