Be sure the furnace is completely out and cool (and unplugged from electrical power!). The furnace must be completely out before cleaning. Every part must be cool to the touch, including the pellets that are left in the burn pot. Live pellets are a fire hazard – especially if they get sucked into a vacuum cleaner. Every year there are stories of house vacuums catching fire by inadvertently sucking up hot ashes. Worse still this can be the source of a house fire! Hot ashes should be stored in a metal container with a tight fitting lid. When the ashes are completely out they can be used as a soil conditioner for your lawn or garden. Wear a dust mask! This is important! Don’t be foolhardy when…

    Tirrill Burn Experiment

The very first experiment had the hypothesis that the temperature of a burner flame can be controlled by adjusting the ratio of gas to air in the mixture to be burned. During this experiment, my partner and I gathered our materials of the paper matches, straight pins, copper wire, laboratory burners, rubber tubing, tongs, and evaporating dish. Making sure we had our safety goggles on and the material we needed, we connected the Tirrill burner into the gas and lit the burner with the match, having the air vents closed and the gas on. When the burner was lit, we noticed that the flame had a luminous, smoky yellow appearance. We then used a pair of tongs to hold the evaporating dish towards the top of the flame for 10 to 20 seconds. We observed…

Born to Allan and Maria Gansevoort Melvill, on August 1, 1819, Herman Melville was the third of eight children who grew up in New York. By the mid- 1830s, Melville had already started writing, but unfortunately, his family had financial problems, and he had to take a job as a cabin boy on a merchant ship that set sail in June 1839. In January of 1841, he sailed again on a whaler named Acushnet and embarked on an excursion to the South Seas; and later the same year he enrolled on an Australian whaler, Lucy Ann, which anchored Tahiti. These two locations are where he found his inspiration for his first novel, Typee (1846), and his second novel Omoo (1847), which both describe Melville’s somewhat romanticized version of his experiences on these islands. Over the next decade, Melville wrote seven more novels…

Although I do not think that the smoke is good for the air, I do however think that the controlled burns are good for the environment in many ways. Fire is a natural resource and forest fires do occur at times simply by nature. When this happens the fire disposes of accumulated debris, it enriches the soil by speeding the nutrient recycle or retard the growth of shrubs or grasses that would otherwise crowd out recently planted seedlings (Yang, 2012). Even though the fire appears to be disastrous, by the following spring, the forest begins new growth. The role that fire plays in shaping ecosystem composition, structure and function includes several ecosystem processes like nutrient cycling, vegetation dynamics, belowground process and soil processes, and water relations. The shaping begins by selecting fire adapted species, and “removing other susceptible species, releasing nutrients from the biomass and improving nutrient cycling, affecting soil properties through changing soil microbial activities and water relations, and creating heterogeneous mosaics, which in turn, can further influence fire behavior and ecological processes” (Chen, 2006, p. 1-2). Despite some of the negatives about fire we must also consider its unique ecological roles within our ecosystem. It is these very reasons why I think…

I started to get everything ready I cleaned the makeshift barbeque grill, (its really a Home Depot style fire pit). I blew out the ashes from the past barbeque we had. I set the bricks along the bottom of the pit. I started to gather up small twigs from around the yard and set them into a small pile in the pit. I doused them with lighter fluid it makes the fire burn easier at the beginning. After I placed the small twigs in the pit I poured the Kingsford charcoal on top of the twigs placed them into a small pile and doused them with lighter fluid too and let them soak in for about tens minutes. Finally I was about to light the fire, I lit the match and bent over to place it at the bottom of the pit when POP it blew up in my face, I was o.k. but I singed a few facial hairs non-the less the fire was burning.…

Burns from fire is common. Usually mature persons are very careful in handling fire. But Children usually do not realise that fire can produce a burning sensation and recklessly play with it. They find it very attractive until it injures them. Once they get burnt, they may realise that it is dangerous to play. In our daily life we may face difficulties. We may learn from our mistakes. Once we know what is expected from mistakes, we will try to avoid repetition. In other words we are like children, we learn from our mistakes. We may take extra caution in future. A wise man never repeats the same mistakes twice. However as saying goes, it is always best to avoid faults and mistakes than to commit them again and learn in due…
