Rikes: A Narrative Analysis
An old house sits on the top of a hill in a small town named Rikes, Wisconsin. It is December in Rikes and the house is covered in snow, with barely any wood left showing. The wooden house is not visible from the nearby street because it is engulfed by thick forest. The house is owned by Frank Nelson, but many people in town refer to him as “Saint Nick” because he is the Santa Clause at the local church. He is in his seventies and he is a widowed husband, no one in town knows about what happened to his wife because he had moved there after she had died. Though some thought this was weird, it did not raise many concerns around town, but most of the parents feel uneasy about Frank because he has had a bad record with the cops and his drinking …show more content…
Most of the kids wake up and run to get their parents to start opening up presents under the tree. But in the Houses of the Robinson’s, the Ware’s, and the Lester’s none of this joy was happening, and there were no kids waking up the parents wanting to open their presents. Instead, there were tears and frantic calls to the police and 911 and to everyone they know around town because the kids were missing.Everything in the houses looks normal, no signs that they had gotten kidnaped or that they had run away. All of the kid’s beds are made perfectly as if they had not even gotten into bed the night before and the air in the rooms felt still and cold. All of the kids missing are boys and all of them are only kids except for ten-year-old Titus Ware, he has a younger brother who is 8. Titus sleeps in the same room as his brother, Tristan, who claims to his crying parents that he saw Santa during the night. Both of the parents ignore what he is saying, they too focused on the phone call with the police describing what Titus looked like. The day is dark for those three families who's kids were missing, while other families have joy and thanks for this day of

All can relate to that one special time of the year, Christmas, when whole families unite and spend hours endlessly sharing stories, making memories, and of course, opening presents! What happens though, when all of the sentimental value of Christmas is replaced solely with physical value, the gifts? What would Christmas be like then? Richard Rodriguez takes the readers through one of his annual Christmases and brings to light, through his thoughts, the disconnect that exists between himself, his siblings, and his parents. Rodriguez’ chronological presentation of events with flashbacks, short, abrupt syntax, light-hearted attention to detail and concerned tone contribute to suggest his worried attitude toward his family.…

In both areas Dad found good paying job as miner or electrician in a mine and for the first few months all the family’s needs were full filled according to the writer. However, when dad lost his job, things around the house would go back into chaos and left mom no choice but to teach and this made life better with their needs met again. During these days everyone was happy and the children received presents regularly like a new bicycle. These events were when the most smiles and happiness in kids was shone off. Finally towards the end of the book everyone moved to New York City and from beginning to end in their stay everyone was joyful. However their dad did die and Maureen moved to California after stabbing her mother but order was still there. Jeanette went to an Ivy League college and after graduating she became a journalist which was what she always wanted to be since high school. The author made this time seem very cheerful except when they talked about her parents in the streets. Towards the end the thanksgiving dinner brought the family all together witch it brought forth a conclusion worth reading. The Glass Castle states on the last paragraph “We raised our glasses. I could almost hear Dad chuckling at Mom's comment in the way he always did when he was truly enjoying something.” This showed at the end of all the pain and suffering there was true peace for their family at…

To start with, food is a basic need for survival. When he found where Zaroff was living he brought up food. He told Ivan who he was and that “[he was] hungry”(Conell 23) . If you don’t have food you die. He can’t call people for food or help, because even if he had a phone, it wouldn't have had worked because he was in a remote location, there is no way he could get good cell service, and his phone would’ve been destroyed because of the water anyways. His first thought when he got on the island was food. He thought to himself that since there were gunshots there were men, and “[w]here there [were] men, there [would be] food”(Conell 22). His instinct was to worry about food first. It makes sense for him to have to worry about food eventually.…

Being that a bunch of kids are together unsupervised, there is going to be some trouble. That is exactly what happens next. The children are all gathered during a winter snowy day making snowballs next to a street throwing them at passing cars. “Its wide black door opened; a man got out of it running. He didn’t even close the car door.” This kind of unexpected thrill we can all relate to. Dillard adds even more by putting in the little details that make the reader feel the anger of this man and the feeling of we’re caught by the children that we have all felt as a kid is described in that same quote. By using these details in the story the reader can put themselves into the shoes of the characters.…

The man described to Jonas and Gabriel what Christmas was, as Jonas had lost all of his memories that had been given to him by The Giver just earlier this year. He could still see color, although he could barely feel the polar cold that was surrounding him. He told them it was a time of love, of families coming together, of receiving presents. All of which Jonas had never experienced. The man invited them over to his house, as he could see that they had no shelter for the night, and that it was extremely cold outside- even though Jonas and Gabriel could not feel the cold. Jonas accepted the invitation with an enthusiastic…

Hansel woke up shortly thereafter and as he lay there awake next to his dreaming sister, he thought back to the night before when he heard his stepmother and father conversing in hushed voices: 'What is to become of us? How are we to feed our poor children, when we no longer have anything even for ourselves?' 'I'll tell you what, husband,' answered the woman, 'early tomorrow morning we will take the children out into the forest to where it is the thickest; there we will light a fire for them, and give each of them one more piece of bread, and then we will go to our work and leave them alone. They will not find the way home again, and we shall be rid of them.' 'No, wife,' said the man, 'I will not do that; how can I bear to leave my children alone in the forest?—the wild animals would soon come and tear them to pieces.' 'O, you fool!' said she, 'then we must all four die of hunger, you may as well plane the planks for our coffins,' and she left him no peace until he consented. 'But I feel very sorry for the poor children, all the same,' said the man. When the old folks had fallen asleep, Hansel got up, put on his little coat, opened the door below, and crept outside. The moon shone brightly, and the white pebbles which lay in front of the house glittered like real silver pennies. Hansel stooped and stuffed the little pocket of his coat with as many as he could get in.…

At the start of the final scene, there are children playing with each other as a group of parents walk into the same room as the children. The minute the parents walk in, all the children gather together in one group, and the children start moving their heads, searching for their parents while the parents start searching for their children. The constant movement of everyone’s heads shows that everyone is anxious and eager to find their loved one so they can finally reunite and show their love for each other. Additionally, the first woman to reconnect with her child calls out, “Julie… Julie!” which indicates that the minute the mother lay eyes upon her daughter, she knew immediately that she had missed her greatly and rushed towards her to hug her very tightly. The tight hug symbolizes what deep compassion two people can obtain for one another, because their love for each other is unbreakable and nothing could tear it apart. Closer to the end of the scene, there are two parents that are keenly looking for their son, Jamie. The mother is the first to spot Jamie and she calls out…
