The real meaning of “Haircut” by Ring Lardner, is to conveyed and understand the situation in the small town by the barber. The barber is insensitive and imperceptive, His recounting of the crude jokes told in his barbershop, and his appreciation of those jokes shows his insensitivity. He speaks of Jim as being the life of the town who is sorely missed rather than as the sadistic, violent, and insensitive bully he really was. Jim Kendall, the main character, is portrayed in a sympathetic light as simply a prankster who was a bit rough. But Jim was, in fact, cruel, a deadbeat, a drunkard, and a womanizer. The theme is portrayed by the oblivious cruelty perpetrated by Kendall, and the shock at the end when it becomes apparent that Paul Dickson

“Manny Bullpucky gets his sorry butt hurled of the Marine Park Bridge.” (Shusterman Page 1). Form the first word of the book the reader can tell that this author is a comedian, that take darker stuff and makes it funny. It’s not funny if someone is thrown off a bridge, but the author makes it seem like a funny topic. This shows how the author is going to try to make everything as comedic as possible and make the readers experience enjoyable. “Life is like a bad haircut. At first it looks awful, then you kind of get use to it, and before you know it, it grows out and you gotta get another haircut that maybe won’t be so bad, unless of course you keep going to SuperClip, where the hairstylist are so terrible that they oughta be using safety scissors, and when they’re don you look like your head got caught in a ceiling fan. So life goes on, good haircuts, bad haircuts, until you finally go bald and it doesn’t matter anymore.” (Shusterman! page 70). The author teaches life lessons with the reader really noticing because the author makes it relatable and humorous. This has an impact on the reader cause your learning philosophies and enjoying it, instead of reading a book of them in old English. “The Schwa almost had a tan in the picture, if you can believe that, and he had a smile on his face as wide as the one on the build board. The job of a barber is currently to cut, dress, groom, style and shave men and boy’s hair. This may seem like pretty simple profession but there is actually a lot to learn to do all of it. The workplace of a barber is known as a barbershop. It is known as a place for socializing and a place where debates take place and it is also a place that has been helpful in shaping identities of boys and men.…

Comedy is a form of cognitive reappraisal, which Drew Hayden Taylor effectively integrates throughout Motorcycles and Sweetgrass to address tragic issues. Personally, I agree with Thomas King, that bombarding the reader with tragedy only results in their lack of interest. I believe that Taylor masters the use of humour to introduce sinister issues; he uses humour as a lubricating tool to ease the tension of the plot and maintain the readers engagement. Particularly, in chapter fourteen, I was intrigued by the way that Taylor glazes over the concept of the fallibility of humanity through Virgil's visit with Wayne. Due to their lack of knowledge, Virgil, and sadly, the entire population of Otter Lake, fall victim of humanity’s tendency to judge…

The barber in the story of “Lather and Nothing Else” by Hernando Tellez is a very interesting character. He is a revolutionary whose day-to-day profession is one of a barber and to act as a spy for the rebellion within the town. His troubles begin when Captain Torres, the leader of the troops stationed within the town, walks into his shop for a shave. Unbeknownst to the captain, the two are sworn enemies that fight on opposite sides of the regime. With this knowledge, one can see that his actions and character within the story were honourable, conceited and morally just. I deem them to be honourable as he refuses to “stain his hands” with “lather and nothing else”(Tellez 346). He is a barber before anything else and respected the boundaries…

The barber’s first decision for resolving the conflict was simply to kill Captain Torres because Captain Torres was on a foray against his fellow revolutionaries. This would be a natural way of thinking for him to do it because he wanted to revenge for his friends. The barber described how easy he could kill the captain and he imaged he had killed the Captain and his flood flowed all over the floor. “And so, which will it be? Murderer or hero? My fate hangs on the edge of his razor blade” (Pg. 364). If the barber had killed the captain, captain’s men would catch and kill him. This is the most important to him ---being a conscientious barber. And now come to his second decision to solve the inner conflict which he could not kill the captain. The barber “does not want to stain his hands with blood. Just with lather and nothing else” (Pg. 365). He didn’t want to lose his life because he knew someone is outside of the barber shop. They were going to catch him if he killed Captain “No one deserves the sacrifice others make in becoming assassins” (P345) revealed the barber had understood that it was morally wrong to kill another human being, no matter what the circumstances were .In conclusion, in the beginning of the story the barber was stuck in a dilemma—kill Captain or not. However, the barber finally decided not to be a murder, just simply a barber and values for his job.…

Another instance of humor in the mock haunting of the property is the way Narayan portrays the shopkeeper as a selfish businessman, bleeding ‘maximum rent' out of his tenants. The reader would then view the cat's and the exorcist's antics as retribution for the shopkeeper. The story would then take a more humorous nature as well, as the reader feels no pity for the shopkeeper. Conversely, one feels pity for his tenants, making the shopkeeper's predicament a comical one.…
