The thieves used several entry points to access TJX corporation systems. They accessed many TJX’s retail stores through poorly secured kiosks. The hackers opened up the back of those terminals and inserted USB drives to install utility software that enabled them to turn the kiosks into remote terminals linked to TJX’s networks. The firewalls that TJX use and had in place did not have enough security to offer and let bad traffic in from the in-store kiosks. The hackers also used mobile data access technology to decode data transmitted wirelessly between handheld price-checking devices, cash registers, and the store’s computers. TJX was using an outdated (WEP) encryption system, which made it easy for hackers to crack. The hackers stole user names and password to setup their own TJX account using handheld equipment and also used the data to crack encryption codes. This allowed them to access TJX system from any computer with internet. The hackers also obtained personal information which could be used for identity theft, including driver license numbers, social security numbers, and military identification of 451,000 customers. The data theft took place over an eighteen month period without anyone’s knowledge. The security controls in place out grew the total size of the company. The system was way overdue for a complete overhaul, because the system was so far out of date with the new technology. I read further about this on the internet and came to find out that the hackers went undetected for seventeen months. This time frame gave the hackers plenty of time to take forty-five…

Robber Barons was the negative term for the titans of industry or, as Professor Donald Miller calls them, the capitalist conquistadors. These were the guys like Andrew Carnegie, Cornelius Vanderbilt, Gustavus Swift, Philip Armour, John D. Rockefeller and others who rose to the top and ran monopolies or near-monopolies in the Gilded Age (1870s-1900ish). They were seen as bad because they employed ruthless methods to run competion out of the market, but on the other hand, weren't breaking any laws or rules in this laissez faire timeperiod. These guys also gave a lot of money away: Carnegie built tons of libraries, and Carnegie Mellon University got a lot from him,…

During the latter part of the nineteenth century, industries began to bloom across the United States. Local businesses and merchants gave way to larger corporations and industries. The head of these industries, such as the names of Rockefeller, Carnegie, and J.P. Morgan, were looked upon as robber barons by some, industrial innovators by others. A baron is "one having great wealth, power, and influence in a specified sphere of activity: an oil baron." Therefore the robber barons that these men were looked upon as were "one of the American industrial or financial magnates of the late 19th century who became wealthy by unethical means, such as questionable stock-market operations…

The late 19th century industrial leaders have often been called "industrial statesmen" for the great economic power they brought to America. However, they have also been called "robber barons” since they built this great wealth by abusing the system, their employees, and destroying their competitors. These kings of industry displayed characteristics of both industrial statesmen and robber barons. But which would better describe them? They had their faults, but overall these leaders should be respected for all they have done.…

A group of men burst into Smith’s home while he was taking a bath. They strung him up naked upside down by the rafters in his home. He couldn’t tell the neighbor about the wire marks that were visible, but did receive medical treatment for the swelling and pain in his groin area. I thought that people like Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, and J.p Morgan were all robber barons. Because they would employ people and put them in these unsafe, and unsanitary conditions. Also they made education for immigrants coming in difficult because even though they built libraries and hospitals would the immigrants would be illiterate and not be able to pay for hospital bills. Lastly theses men were robber barons because they were using vertical integration and horizontal integration to take over small businesses and to raise prices on railroads.…

According to the 16-count indictment and a related criminal complaint, Blalock and Bush allegedly recruited women to steal personal information, such as social security numbers, addresses, and dates of birth, from their employers, which included a local dental practice, insurer, and rental car company. Over 600 potential victims have been identified. Members of the ring are alleged to have used the stolen identity information to manufacture fraudulent identification documents bearing their photographs and victims’ personal information, and would then use those fraudulent identification documents and victims’ social security numbers to open credit lines under victims’ names. Through this scheme, members of the ring were able to obtain merchandise from various retailers.…
