Rocking Horse Winner
The Rocking Horse Winner by D. H. Lawrence (1885-1930) is a tragic story in which the protagonist Hester learns that money does not equal happiness. The setting in the short story is used to express Hester’s longing for luck and what comes along with it. The Rocking Horse Winner takes place approximately from August to End November early December. We can tell that it ends near November because near the end of the story Hester’s birthday arrives which is in November and the book takes place over a few months as we can tell according to the multiple horse races they attended. We also know this book happened around the 20’s because there are world war one references made like (“the young gardener, who had been wounded in the left foot in the war “) …show more content…
The atmosphere in this story is full of anxiety done by the mother-(“Although they lived in style, they felt always an anxiety in the house”) and longing for luck (“yet she had no luck.”) which brings money (“If you're lucky you have money”). The house that this story takes place in is in a pretty nice neighbourhood but still there is this tension of wanting a better, more expensive house.
