Letters exchange from The Jewish Question in Early Modern England and Examination of Rodrigo Lopez-
A Summary

Examination of Rodrigo Lopez

Lopez was a Portuguese Jew who converted to Christianity and lived in England. He served as the Queen’s physician, and was accused of conspiring with Spanish civilians to murder the queen. He claimed that he was innocent and only cooperated with the Spanish in order to reveal their dangerous intentions. Lopez was found guilty nonetheless, and was executed. Kaplan brings original documents from the time of the execution, and claims that they prove that Lopez was convicted because he was Jewish. The conviction documents compare Lopez to Judah who betrayed Jesus, and state that Lopez cannot be

His first argument is that the Jews will bring profit to England, and that their trading skills will contribute to the English economy and trading connections. The second argument is more complicated and relates the loyalty of the Jews to the English king. In order to prove this loyalty, Ben Israel refutes some of the common false accusations against the Jews.
The first accusation he refutes is usury. According to Ben Israel, usury is not common among the Jews, and those who practice it are wicked Jews. Moreover, the Spanish Jews see it as forbidden, and compare it to the sin of robbing strangers. Then Ben Israel addresses the accusation of the murder of Christian children in Passover. He says that it is as baseless as the similar accusation which was made against Christians when they were foreigners in other countries. Ben Israel also explains that contrary to the common belief, the Jews do not aim to convert all Christians.
His final argument is related to the return of the messiah. Ben Israel explains that there are two preconditions for the return of the messiah: First - the Jews have to be dispersed all over the world including England; and after that they have return to Israel. According to this logic, the Jews have to return to England in order for this process to

Various leaders of this document, “Debating the Balfour Declaration: The British Government Supports a Jewish Homeland in Palestine”, envision the impact of creating a Jewish state on Jews living in other countries would be a great change to the world. For instance, Jules Cambon sent a letter to Nahum Sokolow stating that creating a Jewish state would be a deed of justice. Because the French Government entered a war, creating a Jewish state would give a home for the Jewish people and give Jews from all parts of the world to migrate together. Many Jews didn’t agree with the idea of combining Jews together such as the English Jews. Even though they didn’t agree, other Jews in larger numbers were understanding to…

The relationship between Richard Rodriguez and Richard Hoggart is supremely that of a student to a teacher with Rodriguez as the student and Hoggart as the teacher. In moments when Rodriguez says that Hoggart’s opinion of what a “scholarship boy” entails is “more accurate than fair,” Rodriguez is learning more as if he is a student (547). Of course Rodriguez now, after having written “The Achievement of Desire,” understands his place as a “scholarship boy” student; however, there are brutally honest aspects that Hoggart is able to recognize and Rodriguez does not want to acknowledge. Rodriguez lived through his education as a “bank,” as Paulo Freire would say, and there are many negative impacts that this had on his future and actual knowledge.…

Rodriguez faces a few tensions in his personal experience such as being a "scholarship boy" as oppose to a well rounded student and and his life at home compared to a more friendly home environment. Rodriguez says that "I was a very good student, I was a also a very bad student. I was a scholarship boy, a certain kind of scholarship boy. Always successful, I was always unconfident. Exhilarated by my progress. Sad. I became the prized student - anxious and eager to learn. Too eager, too anxious - an imitative and unoriginal pupil." ( Rodrigues #283 ) Rodriguez describes himself here as imitating his teachers too much and being a perfect student instead of thinking for himself and taking in the knowledge he is given by his teachers and analyzing it and putting it to use. He is unoriginal and and uninteresting compared to a student who can use their knowledge in their own way and gets more involved. The other tension Rodriguez faces his the tension he has with his family, mostly his mother and father. At home his mother and father both support and encourage what he is doing very much but they didn't like the fact that he would always be in his room and the fact that the only thing he was involved with was school. "He permits himself embarrassment at their lack of education." (Rodriguez #286) This quote shows that Rodriguez's amount of knowledge of the english language and other subjects he had compared to his parents and therefore he was somewhat embarrassed by them and it created a tough home environment to live in because he didn't communicate much with his parents. This contrasts the home environment where their is a strong relationship between the family and their is communication.…

The Disputation of Barcelona in 1263 is not a commonly known event to most people in this day and age, but back in the Medieval Ages it is widely known incident. The Latin Account of the Barcelona Disputation is the main Christian document used to follow the events of the Disputation and my primary source I will be analyzing for this essay. The account states that the Disputation took place in Barcelona on July 20th, 1263 and had many spectators including King James, barons, prelates, religious and military persons, Jews, Christians and many more. It also mentions that many questions were asked towards the “Jewish Master” or Moses about whether or no the Messiah had appeared and if the Messiah was a divine or a human being and finally whether…

After the First World War Britain was given mandatory powers over Palestine as the countries of the Western World believed the Arabs could not have looked after Palestine themselves but the League of Nations put lots of terms on the mandate that Britain had to follow to try and keep both the Jews and the Arabs content. Two of those rules being: To let Jewish immigrants into Palestine and to protect the rights of the local Arabs. So small numbers of Jews were wandering in to their ‘rightful homeland’ without being really noticed but during the 1930s the figures increased enormously as the rise of Hitler in Germany got ever stronger, the Jews knew they could be in danger so they looked for safety in Palestine. In 1938 alone 60,000 East European Jews had made their way into the ‘Land of Milk and Honey’. By now the Arabs were getting angry at the huge rise in Jewish immigrants so in order to keep things clam between the rivals, in 1939 Britain laid down a quota of 77,000 Jewish immigrants over the next five years. The west did not realise what was happening to the Jews throughout the Second World War until it was over and they were shocked by the pictures they had seen of the Jews that Britain had turned away in Palestine that were now dead in concentration camps in and around Eastern Europe.…

Throughout the history of the world, the Jewish people have been persecuted and oppressed because of their religious beliefs and faith. Many groups of people have made Jews their scapegoat. Jews have suffered from years of intolerance because people have not understood what the religion really means. They do not understand where and why the religion began, nor the customs of its people. For one to understand the great hardships, triumphs, and history of the Jewish people, one must open-mindedly peruse a greater knowledge of the Jewish people and faith, while acknowledging their impact on society today.…

It was seen as a conflict of interest because Italy and Germany declared war on Great Britain and its colonies and protectorates. While Ben-Gurion tried to help save European Jewry, there are some that disagree regardless of evidence that shows he tried. Some will say that David Ben-Gurion had no interest in helping the Jews during the Holocaust. Even though Ben-Gurion tried to put in effort to help the Jewish people, people will say that his motives for doing so were to create a Jewish statehood just to spread Zionism. Zionism is the belief that there should be a Jewish statehood. Though there are many that disagree with this because, Ben-Gurion was creating a Jewish state so he could fight for the democracy of the Jewish people. There was no ulterior motive on his part because, since he helped create Israel, he helped the Jews which is what he intended to do anyway. Ben-Gurion saw Jews of all different backgrounds as one family under the same roof, and this is what made him a good leader. He did not just focus on middle eastern/ Sephardic Jews, but also European/Ashkenazi Jews as well, and by doing so, Israel is a Jewish country to represent all Jewish people. Before and during the…
