    Suspense In The Landlady

Readers enjoy noticing suspense in stories because it hooks them on to read the rest of the story. In “The Landlady” by Roald Dahl, a man named Billy Weaver stays at a bed & breakfast and meets the Landlady. The Landlady is an odd woman. She appears as a kind and generous soul, but on the inside she is an evil and despicable lady with bone-chilling plans for Billy. In Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart”, the old man had no problems with the narrator. The narrator actually liked the old man, but the level of insanity in the narrator’s head leads him to committing a horrific, gruesome act. Therefore, suspense is depicted in both Roald Dahl’s “The Landlady” and Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart” through the use of symbolism and descriptive…

Would you stay at a cozy, warm place with a nice old woman? It's nice and comforting, with only one kink; it's the house of a murderer. In the story “The Landlady,” by Roald Dahl, the main character, Billy, stayed at a place called the Bed and Breakfast. The reader was manipulated into thinking the Bed and Breakfast was a cozy place with a nice old woman, but in reality it was the home of a murderer who was about to take her next victim. Authors manipulate their reader’s expectations of reality through the use of assumptions and stereotyping.…

Both Hunter and Dahl use point of view and setting to form the sinister tone in their baleful narratives. Written in third person, ‘Listen to the End’ starts with the girl hurriedly running to her familiar apartment at night while “swirls of mist danced beckoningly around her”. As though they are trapping and suffocating her, stopping her from getting back to her home, her safety. ‘The Landlady’ is also written in third person but alternatively, Billy Weaver is arriving to an unfamiliar place at night. He is compelled by the sign that was “staring at him through the glass”, and “forcing him to stay”, ultimately pulling him towards the wicked motel. Hunter’s omniscient narrator tells the story very intimately, as if he was there and is sensing what the girl is feeling. Unlike Dahl, who arranges his story to be told like an imagination, rather than telling it as though it was a memory. Therefore, these creative techniques of having darkness around the character from the beginning makes the stories sound threatening.…

The Landlady was written by Roald Dahl, and was published in 1959. The story was written in a hospitable setting, that seems perfectly normal until the true intentions of the pleasing little bed and breakfast were revealed. The main character is completely unaware, and is at ease alone in the setting with the villain. The antagonist seems perfectly normal, though a little bit dotty, but the main character passes it off as loneliness. Later, though the side character complete true intentions were never foiled, the reader seems to realize what she means to do with the main character. This particular style of writing uses foreshadowing a great deal, but the most distinctive style that the author uses on this story is how he leaves the story open ended, allowing for the reader’s imagination to end the story.…

I feel like I am slightly exceeding food intake recommendations, I feel this way because of all of the physical activity I participate in.
