The Female Roles in Othello Each role that the women in Shakespeare’s Othello play illustrates different aspects of the female personality based off of the nature of their relationship. Desdemona plays the role of a woman who is dedicated to her marriage. Emilia role is of a woman trying to amend her faulty marriage, but eventually gives up having made a deeper connection with someone else. Bianca’s character is a representation of a woman who desires to be married, but cannot obtain it based off her lifestyle. It is obvious in the play that Iago has a blatant disrespectful attitude towards women. That disrespect is only intensified when it comes to dealing with his wife. In a conversation with Desdemona and Emilia, Iago belittles his wife by telling her, “You rise to play and go to bed to work.” (II.i.112-113) The reader could assume that Iago’s mistreatment of his wife contributes to her optimistic attitude towards infidelity. Emilia supports this idea saying, “But I do think it is their husbands’ faults if wives do fall.” (IV.iii.89-90) Despite the fact that her husband doesn’t respect her Emilia still defends her husband until it is reveal that he is the reason why Desdemona has been killed. The bond that Emilia and Desdemona shared eventually overpowers Emilia’s commitment to her marriage, and she goes against her husband by telling Othello that it was Iago who orchestrated the incident with the handkerchief. The character of Emilia shows how a marriage that has gone askew will eventually crumble once the woman has found someone else she can attach herself
