Cassie was forced to say sorry when she really didn’t want to. Mr. Simms pushed her into the road for something that wasn’t really her fault. Mr. Simms would have never done that to a white child but since Cassie is black, he thought it wouldn’t harm anyone to push her into the road. “That ain't enough. Get down in the road.”(113). Cassie was walking on the sidewalk when she accidentally bumped into Lillian Jean. Lillian became mad and asked her to apologize, Cassie apologized but then Lillian Jean wanted her to walk in the road. When Cassie refused, Mr. Simms came and pushed her into the road and made Cassie say sorry again. It is clear that this event wouldn’t happen if two white people bumped into each other but, again, since they have different skin colors, Cassie was pushed and forced to say sorry over a small bump that wasn’t even intentional.
In the end, it is wrong to treat people unfairly because of their skin color of their skin is the theme that appears most throughout the novel Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry. Events showing this are when Little man and the others get splashed, and when old man Berry was lit on fire, and finally when Lillian Jean and her dad force Cassie to say sorry and walk in the road. People can’t help something they're born with and people should accept everyone for who they really are, Cassie shows that you should be proud about
