Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin was born in 1872 in Siberia. Little is known about Rasputin’s childhood life, but around the age of eighteen he converted and embraced the Khlysty sect and lifestyle. He grew up poor, with little or no education and was unable to read or write. Rasputin married and had four children, but left his family behind and travelled for around two years, establishing a reputation for himself as a holy man. To add to his reputation, people were saying he could heal the sick and his immoral behavior shocked many. Little of this has to do with his rise into altering the fate of an empire and its rulers. In 1903, Rasputin’s travels and ‘healing’ of people brought him to St. Petersburg. Back in Russia he met with the Bishop of Saratov and was introduced to many different salons (i.e, drawing room, reception room) of Petersburg society. During his first years in the capital, he gained large popularity, Moshein, Rob the people were interested in him and were strongly moved by how extraordinary his prayers seemed to be. The Romanov court at this time was experimenting in mysticism, and Rasputin was recommended to Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra in 1905. This set the wheels in motion of the destruction of a monarchy. Rasputin’s rise to the influence of the royals can be dated to his summoning’s by the Tsarina to the palace, in order to control the symptoms of Tsesarevich Alexei’s hemophilia. Once Rasputin was able to ‘save’ her son from death, Alexandra became fascinated by this man. Alexei being hemophiliac, was at danger of any cut to his body that could be a serious risk to his health, Rasputin being able to help him gave him immediate favor and confidence in him from Alexandra. Rasputin’s success in restricting the young Tsesarevich’s loss of blood and the massive appreciation from the Tsarina sets in stone his reputation of being a mystic healer. As Rasputin began to be a major part of the royal family’s lives, he was careful and aware of keeping up a presence of being a talented humble mystical peasant in their company Duffy, Michael. Despite the new life he had within Russian court, Rasputin did not give up the routine he had taken hold of from being part of the Khlysty sect. His scandalous sexual lifestyle was informed to Tsar Nicholas, who dismissed him from court. It was not long before Alexandra called him back and discouraged any criticism of her nickname for him; ‘our friend’ Duffy, Michael. Both Nicholas and Alexandra refused to give credibitliy to reports of his misbehavior after this incident. He soon acquired huge influence over the Romanovs. Along the way Rasputin certified that his own personal followers were given powerful positions in the Russian government, in spite of the inability to the professions assumed to them History Learning Site. Rasputin’s changes to the Russian way of government were already being to come under way. He had the complete trust of the Tsarina, who the Tsar had total faith in. On top of which he had his own people now working within court and within the government. As Alexei’s condition was not allowed to be public knowledge among the people, there was little understanding as to what Rasputin’s true chief role was as a healer at court Duffy, Michael. Many citizens assumed that he was simply seducing Alexandra, and this was immediately public talk and scandal. Rasputin’s influence would continue to grow and grow, until it was to the point that, going into wartime, there was no stopping the effect he would have upon the Romanov dynasty Duffy, Michael. After Rasputin had entered the lives of the royal family and had built so much confidence in him, there was little that could have been done to bring order back. Alexandra often sought council and advice on political matters from Rasputin Duffy, Michael, truly interested and trusting of his view points, she generally listened to him and followed through. When War World I broke out, Rasputin’s influence continued on into the hard times ahead Duffy, Michael. The Tsarina continued seeking his opinion on policy matters, and Rasputin was never unprepared to offer his advice on military strategies, although this advice never seemed to prove beneficial to anyone Duffy, Michael. All Rasputin’s guidance seemed to do was damage the public perception of the royal family Duffy, Michael. The military catastrophes were often attributed to directly by the Russian people to Rasputin and his menacing influence. This took a bit of the load away of the straight criticism from Nicholas himself. In 1915 the tsar makes the decision to relieve his uncle of his duties and take personal command of his army from the front of the war. Nicholas left his sickly heir, daughters, wife all behind and his tsarina in charge. Nicholas leaving Alexandra in charge effectively left Rasputin in charge of Russia in the absence of the Tsar History Learning Site. Disaster was coming and beckoning from many fronts for the Russians, the Romanovs, and Rasputin. The tsar was now thereafter directly associated with his armies efforts. Rasputin’s hold over Alexandra was the greatest it had ever been and would be History Learning Site. Alexandra called Rasputin ‘our friend’ while Rasputin’s growing enemies in Russia called him the ‘Mad Monk’. In Nicholas’ absence the home governance of political affairs were left in the hands of Tsarina Alexandra (equaling Rasputin) and the Prime Minister (who was willing to abide by any of his Tsarina’s wishes) Duffy, Michael. Rasputin continued to offer advice in every field he saw needed; armies, the public, church matters, etc. Duffy, Michael Seemingly everyone, apart from the Romanovs, especially Alexandra, was fed up with Rasputin. The nobles were done with him and his constant need to give advice on every issue, predicting the demise of himself and the royals, and his behavior. Something had to be done, the Romanov family name was being disgraced, along with the country itself. Matters had to be taken into someone else’s hands, Rasputin needed to go. And he needed to stay gone Duffy, Michael.
Rasputin had convinced himself that he was a man destined to do something great for Russia and the Tsar Moshein, Rob. He was a religious man, taking his religion to the extreme with a destiny to fulfill. A group of nobles were very resolute to resolve the truly dreadful damage that had been inflicted upon the monarchy by Rasputin. The answer; murder. An assassination upon Rasputin was planned, rumors revolving around Rasputin seemed not to matter, as these were only rumors. Rasputin was said to be immune from poison, that he could drink it and had superhuman strength History Learning Site. This left quite an air of mystery about him History Learning Site. On December 29th in 1916, Yusupov called upon Rasputin for dinner. Rasputin was given poisoned wine and foods, as he ate them Yusupov was alarmed to find that these rumors could be true. Rasputin ate the poison unknowingly and without dying. Yusupov was so frightened, that he shot Rasputin. This caused him to collapse briefly, but he recovered and succeeded in escaping out of the house. He was shot again multiple times, before the nobles threw his body into a frozen river. Grigori Rasputin died drowning in the freezing water. This action was taken in attempt to rid the Russians of Rasputin and save the monarchy of Russia. This bold move taken by the nobles, was too late. The death of Rasputin simply detached him as a barrier between the Romanovs and their critics. The feelings of distaste directed to Rasputin of the people had nowhere else to go but to the Romanovs themselves Duffy, Michael. The demise that Rasputin had predicted of himself and the royals, that the nobles attempted to stop, had been set in motion long ago and had gone too far to be stopped. In less than a year, Tsar Nicholas II would abdicate from his throne, and in two years, the entire royal family would be executed. Not directly by the hands of a mystic from Siberia, but by his hands just the same.
In February of 1917, two months after the death of Rasputin, without their buffer, the Romanovs were being blamed left and right for everything; and the people were not happy. In the time of war, Russia’s economy was deeply affected and was suffering a devastating impact. The food supply was short, and prices were rising every day. The workers in the city began to strike against the government. Troops were sent to stop these strikers, but many soldiers began joining them Simkin, John. By February 27, 1917 there were approximately 200,000 workers on strike in the streets. Tsar Nicholas did nothing about this situation but send a message to his troops in the city, telling them to stop any disorders in the streets Simkin, John. The next day the troops fired on these campaigners in the capital. Some of the soldiers refused these orders, while many other men joined the striking workers. Nicholas ordered the state assembly (The Duma) to close down, but many of its members were continuing to meet and discuss what needed to be done. The Duma suggested to Nicholas to assign a new government that could be commanded by someone with more confidence in the countries people. The high command of the Russian army feared of a violent revolution arising, they suggested to the Tsar to abdicate from his throne to the favor of a more popular member of the family. But on March 1, 1917 Nicholas abdicated and left the provisional government in control of the country. Grigori Rasputin was a candidly dedicated man, believing simply that he could ultimately serve the people and the tsar.
Rasputin altered the course of a reigning family over an empire of three centuries. The amount Rasputin achieved and managed to change even past his murder was vastly amazing, he attained lots of significant power in a short amount of time during his period spent with the royal family History Learning Site. Grigori Rasputin became a central figure in modern Russian history up until the fall of the Romanov dynasty History Learning Site. When Rasputin entered the home of the Tsar and his family, he ultimately entered the home and lives of the entire country. By ‘miraculously’ saving the life of an ill Tsesarevich Alexei for a brief time in his short life, Rasputin took down the rest of his family and their rule
swiftly.
