For Romeo and Juliet I chose to make the costumes based off what they wore in the movies during the balcony scene where Romeo is watching juliet and Juliet is talking to herself, asking why Romeo is Romeo, and so on. I picked this scene for my Costumes because I believe it was the main stepping stone for the rest of the story it pretty much determined the rest of their fate in the whole movie. For Romeo I chose to make just a plain shirt because what he wore always looked simple but put together. I also dressed him in a pair of tights for the bottoms. For juliets costume I looked at what was worn throughout both the 1968 movie and the 1996 movie. I also looked through what was worn in the Victorian era which is what Romeo and Juliet is said to have taken place in. I ended up making a dress which looks like what you would averagely seen during that era. For Juliet’s mother I did the same thing I just used a pattern that was just a bit different and a different material. I based her costume off what she would have worn at the party since she wasn’t present during the balcony scene which I had used for both Romeo and Juliet’s

Romeo’s hawaiian shirt symbolizes his commitment to Juliet, as he couldn’t change out of his shirt due to his desire to spend as much time with her as he could. Zeffireli’s dark Romeo is portrayed as negative whereas Luhrman’s Romeo is a softer, more romantic character. Following the demise of the two young lovers, Romeo's dead body is dressed in faded Montague house colors for Zeffirelli’s film, and in a white body bag for Luhrman. The faded blue and black is Romeo’s faded loyalty to his house, depicting Romeo as untrustworthy. A white body bag represents the pure intentions of Romeo’s suicide, trying to fend off Juliet’s loneliness in death, “For the fear of that i will stay with thee” (5.3.106). The underlying characterizations of Romeo’s outfits depict him in a negative manner with darker colors and unreliable traits as a young lover in Zeffieli’s movie. IN Luhrman’s movie, Romeo is a kind-hearted, righteous character with light colors and genuine intentions. Although both films were based off the same script, minor details such as costuming can provide all the worlds a…

Baz Luhrmann’s film takes place in modern times in a city similar to the city of Los Angeles. The starting scene of this movie shows that this is a whole different take on Romeo and Juliet. The city setting surprisingly fits to the theme of Romeo and Juliet. The clothing of the characters does bring out their personality a lot more than than Zefferelli's version. For example, Tybalt would dress as a gang member would dress, and would have his hair in an organized fashion. This shows that Tybalt is the antagonist and might not be the friendliest person in the book. The setting of this book does not fit the book’s time period, but it is surprisingly fitting to the character’s and family’s personality of the book. In the book, there are two families which dislike each other, and in the movie there are two families which could be compared to gangs. This is because the city is split in half and fights always break out between them. The atmosphere in this version is very dramatic throughout the whole film. This is beneficial to the movie because it can help emphasize something bad that has happened more. For example, when Romeo was banished from Verona, Juliet was extremely upset, and it is really portrayed well in this movie. Overall Baz Luhrmann’s film portrays the book very well despite, it taking place in a whole different time…

The film Romeo and Juliet, directed by Baz Luhrmann in 1996, is a romantic tragedy that tells the story of two young lovers who commit suicide. Their deaths that conclude Baz Luhrmann’s film were a result of the terrible feud running between their two families. Tybalt, Juliet’s cousin, has a major role in the events that lead to their deaths, and was made a disliked character through many different techniques. The techniques I will be describing are costume, camera shots and angles and using a motif.…

In the setting the costumes that the characters wear kind of tell what kind of person they are. Like curley's wife she wears a different dress each day and fixes her hair. That to me means like she has the money and then you have like linne, george, candy, crooks who wear the same clothes because they don't have the money too. I think this adds to the movie by telling the readers what time it is in by what the characters wears and the busses that take them places.…

The character I chose to render a costume design for is Troy Maxson from the play Fences by August Wilson. Troy is the family’s main source of income and his character is a very strong willed and stubborn 53-year-old man. Troy relentlessly told his son, Cory, multiple times that his football recruitment was a waste of time and that he should get “…recruited in how to fix cars or something where he can make a living” (8; ch.1, sec.1). Therefore, from Troy’s actions, I knew that his costume should entail a sense of seriousness such as nothing brightly colored or crazy patterned clothing. Another area in the script that influences my costume choices was the setting of the play. The play was set on a dirty entrance of an old brick building house…

He is constantly longing for his love, Rosaline, to return his affections. He is almost always depicted outside, rather than in the Montague mansion. This represents the independence and freedom he has due to his status, gender and wealth in the Italian society. When his friends, Benvolio and Mercutio invite him to gatecrash a Capulet party to see Rosaline, his character suddenly changes. He meets Juliet and falls instantly in love, revealing that he is very rash and does not analyze or think about what he is doing. It appears he cannot do anything in moderation and his character displays emotional and extreme…

    Juxtaposition In Hamlet

Hamlet will be a jock (stereotypically the popular people in high school) wearing a purple varsity jacket because purple represents royalty and Hamlet’s popularity is reflecting the royal prince that he is in the play. He will also be wearing black and white converse which would convey that he is both a good and bad character. As well as a yellow hat to symbolize a crown. Marcellus and Horatio are wrestlers so I’d make them wear muscle shirts to make them look like intimidating protectors (like the guards that they are in the play). Horatios’ shirt would be blue to represent his loyalty to Hamlet and also that he is a trustworthy character since later on Hamlet would trust him with his plan to reveal Claudius’ guilt.…

In Luhrmann’s film, set in the 20th century, the costuming, decorations and lighting are flamboyant and colourful, giving a lively and entertaining feel to the party; Romeo is dressed symbolically as a knight in shining armour to show that he will rescue Juliet. Luhrmann uses this to emphasise Romeo’s youth and enthusiasm. Juliet is represented as an angel in white to show her purity and to foreshadow her imminent death. Paris is dressed as an astronaut to show that he is out of this world and too good to be true. Mercutio cross-dresses as a woman being both man and women representing that he is not on either side of the feud. Tybalt is all fired up dressed as the devil with horns to portray the hatred he feels…

One of the many things that are different now from when Shakespeare was around is fashion. People dressed different. They dressed weird but to them that was the way it was. If you had layers of clothing it showed how wealthy, you were. Color described what class you were. Purple for example was very expensive so only people like the queen would wear it. Now we just put some jeans and a shirt on and call it good, though there is a way to classify someone from a lower class to a higher class. Now we have brands like Michal Kors, Versace, or Channel to show how…

Luhrmann uses modern elements of cinematography to lure modern audiences into the movie, while still using the main plot and themes of William Shakespeare’s play. The usage of costuming in the movie is up to date with what is to be expected if a modern movie and is used to attract an audience, with the clothing being significantly changed from Romeo + Juliet. Juliet’s distinct beauty is portrayed by Shakespeare’s usage of light and dark imagery. When Romeo first sees Juliet at Capulet’s ball, her beauty captivates his attention as if she were “a snowy dove trooping with crows” (I.v.55). Shakespeare uses the contrast between the light feathers of a dove, and the dark feathers of a crow to depict Romeo’s strong attraction to Juliet. He chooses her out of all the stunning people at the party. He describes her as “a rich jewel in an Ethiop’s ear” (I.v.53). Her magnificence radiates throughout the dark night, sparkling as if it were against the dark skin of an Ethiop. Her unique beauty distinguishes her from the other girls at the party. Shakespeare utilizes light and dark imagery to differentiate Rosaline, Romeo’s previous love, and Juliet. When Romeo takes Benvolio’s advice and compares Rosaline’s face to Juliet’s, he finds his “swan a crow” (I.iii.94). Rosaline was a swan of grace and beautiful white feathers, but once Romeo sees Juliet’s beauty, Rosaline is degraded to an unattractive black crow. Shakespeare uses dark and light imagery to create a mood of love and attraction towards Juliet. This mood foreshadows a kindling passion between the young lovers.…
