Theme: Love “Love is that condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own” (Robert Heinlein). Love is not only huge in this play, but also in reality. In this play, many characters show love in different ways. Love is all around, and is a strong theme in Romeo and Juliet written by Shakespeare. Many types of love are shown such as; eros love, storge love, and philios love. Eros love is the biggest part of love in Romeo and Juliet, and has a big meaning behind it. When Romeo first laid eyes on Juliet at the party, he fell in love. He said, “O she doth teach the torches to burn bright” (1,5,43). This proves that there is such thing as ‘love at first sight’. This specific quote demonstrates how quickly one can fall in love and how true it may be. Romance is found to be one of the most important things in life, and that one person means a lot. Benvolio shows philios love toward Romeo to get over Rosaline. Benvolio says, “By giving liberty unto thine eyes, examine other beauties” (1,1,221). He is trying to be a good friend and help Romeo feel better and be caring to help him move on. This love is also shown when Romeo is livid about Mercutio’s death and wants revenge on Tybalt. Romeo stated this, “Staying for thine to keep him company, either thou or I, or both, must go with him” (3,1,24).
