Having to leave the Romanian speaking part of Yugoslavia and make the move to Australia would have cut Romulus deep. Romulus always considered him a Romanian' and the first glimpse of the suffering that Romulus went though occurred early. At a young age Romulus pushed through family problems to the point of being prepared to shoot his drunken uncle who was about to beat his grandfather. No child wants to go though this but Romulus fought through the difficult time. Another factor of the move would have been Christine's deteriorating health and her input enforced the move. He then began his journey to Australia where the poor guy was greeted with tough circumstances and horrendous suffering. …show more content…
From a young age Romulus was denied a full education, the one thing he strived for.
For two of his early years in Australia he was forced to work manually to pay off his debts. Soon after Romulus he was forced to adapt to the terrible living conditions as he undertook a blacksmith apprenaship. Romulus was paid well below wages and cheated out of being able to sell his own creations. Being the practical genius he was, it was a shame that such ideas as the egg washing machine, couldn't have been capitalized
on.
The conditions that Romulus lived by, although he had no choice over, were completely filthy and hardly acceptable. The house was simply deteriorating rapidly and the animals lived inside. But Romulus only knew poverty' and stuck it out though an unimaginable amount of suffering which was also marked by the individuals involved in his life.
Romulus was a great man of loyally, trust and valued truthfulness above most things.' He also hated lying. But after he thought he had brought Raimond up in his footsteps he suffered greatly, when Rainmond lied to his face about the razor incident. Romulus also suffered heavily this time caused by Christine. After giving up so much to move countries to search for a cure for her health, Romulus suffers when Christine finds herself involved in affairs with other men.
It is without a doubt that Romulus Gaita personally suffers' in Romulus, My Father.' He gives up so much by moving to Australia, not getting the education his love of learning desired, the poor conditions he was forced to live by and the selfishness actions of others. But Romulus the poised man he was, never gave up and hanged in there to the end.
