I am Emily PadillaChicas and I am a sophomore at Albemarle High School. It is both an honor and a privilege to be here tonight with you, and to have the chance to share a little bit about who I am in this community. I was born and raised here in Charlottesville, Virginia, and I am blessed to be able to live in a community full of diversity and opportunities to help those around me. As for family, I have a twin brother named Arnold, and an older brother named Marvin. My mom is an astonishing woman who is always giving back to others, and I’m very fortunate to have a role model like her. I’m interested in many activities such as, spending time with friends and family, playing soccer and volunteering! I am dedicated to helping and improving the world around us, and I am able to do so through programs I am involved in such as,
YADAPP. YADAPP is an annual summer leadership conference empowering teens to keep their schools and communities alcohol and drug free by taking positive peer leadership roles. My peers and I created a club at our school called
STAND
, which has the same goals as YADAPP
. I was appointed VicePresident, which was a great opportunity to help me gain stronger leadership skills.
In addition to this, I am also a longtime member of the
AVID
Program.
AVID stands for
Advanced Via Individual Determination.
AVID is an elective class offered to students who would like to prepare for a fouryear college. Students must challenge themselves to take higher level classes, take initiative in and outside of school, and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher.
I believe that in order to make change, one must take action. I am able to do so, by being a part of Student Council. Every month a group of students from each high school in Charlottesville come together to address the issues in our school system. We brainstorm solutions, to put into action to make our schools and
