4 Communication: Exemplary; Outstanding
___Clever/Original introduction with a clear purpose and thesis
___Sustained eye contact with audience
___Excellent organization of ideas and supporting evidence
___Excellent volume, pitch variation, and steady rate
___Confident Manner/Voice: Glances infrequently at notes
___Demonstrates consistent ownership and enthusiasm
___Stance: feet planted and gestures are appropriate
___Correct pronunciation, grammar, sophisticated diction (word choice)

3 Communication: Effective
___Clever introduction with a clear purpose and thesis
____Frequent eye contact with audience
____Strong organization of ideas and supporting evidence
____Strong volume, pitch variation, and steady rate
____Confident manner/voice: Is not entirely dependent on notes
____Stance: feet planted and gestures are appropriate
____Obvious enthusiasm and ownership but may not be sustained
____Correct pronunciation, grammar, sentence structure; no slang

2 Communication: Meets expectations
____Clear purpose and thesis
____Eye contact (at least 3 times with entire audience)
____Adequate organization and supporting evidence
____Sufficient volume, limited pitch variation (monotone), and generally appropriate rate
____Some confidence; some shifting, generally controlled gestures
____Generally appropriate pronunciation, grammar, sentence structure; no Slang

1 Communication: Does not meet expectations
____Purpose and thesis are unclear
____Brief glances at audience (no more than 2 times)
____Ineffective organization and supporting evidence
____Speaks in a barely audible volume; no variation in pitch, rate too fast or too slow
____Tentative: awkward stance or movement; inappropriate gestures
____Obvious errors in pronunciation, grammar, and sentence structure; uses slang

All persuasive or informative speeches should be 2-5 minutes long. A student is automatically disqualified if his/her speech
