1. Rule utilitarianism is to make sure the rule promotes the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people. Rule utilitarianism sees things objectively with consequences and develops the rules. In this Nurofen case, they do deceptive advertising which sell new type of medicine with the same ingredients of drug in different package and double its pricing. This is intended to increase their company profits. But, Nurofen did not think about their brand name in the long term. After being found by ACCC, they will lose market share and people trust on their medicine. Moreover, this is not aligning with the rule utilitarianism. The rules said telling the truth is the best way to achieve utilitarianism’s goal. Also, this is not making greater

    The essential part of utilitarianism, whether it is Act or Rule, is to promote the greatest overall utility for the given situation. If we look in terms of Utilitarianism, one would be in favor of killing Tom to save the other four children. Even though, Tom would be killed, he would promote overall utility by saving four people through his one body. This reminds me a lot of the Trolley problem we studied in Unit five. They killed one man to save multiple.     Rule utilitarianism focus on following rules rather than a case by case scenario. Rule utilitarian will look to prior history to see what actions have been taken in similar situations; therefore, there is no concern to “immediate” happiness. They are not concerned with pleasure and pain. They are concerned with long term consequences and the benefits of the whole society. They are concerned with the greatest good.     There are obvious problems with both Act and Rule Utilitarianism. Both theories share the common goal of achieving the greatest happiness for the greatest amount of people. However, it is impossible to measure or compare happiness, as one persons happiness may not necessarily be another’s. And how do we measure intangible gain, such as happiness against material gain, such as money? The root principle is a good concept, but it’s the means to which we arrive at the end that cause the problems. In my opinion, there is a greater problem with Act Utilitarianism versus Rule, because it justifies not only ethical but also unethical actions in order to achieve the desired results. It allows for the abuse of people’s rights, demoralizes and devalues the welfare of individuals if it brings enough happiness to the group.
