Sacred Places
Many different types of things can be considered sacred, whether it is a location or a thing. Sacredness is usually considered a term when somewhere or something is worshipped by a religious group. The Ganges River in Asia and Lourdes in France are both some common places that many believe have inexplainable miracles occur there due to the sacredness of the place. Whether something is considered sacred can sometimes be a controversial topic when a regards the conservation or protection of somewhere or something, such as the Redwood Trees in the American West. Not protecting something shows that one is not very passionate about it, thus making it not very sacred. “A good example of such traditional practices is the conservation and protection of small forests,” (Sacred Groves, M.L. Khan) Conservation is a huge part of keeping something sacred for a community or an ingenious culture. It is a common tradition to worship and protect something vastly important to the society. Another huge reason why so many sacred groves are conserved and protected is because of biodiversity. Biodiversity is the variety of the different types of life on Earth and the variation within species. Biodiversity on Earth, however, has been decreasing at a rapid pace due to the natural world and the manufactured world competing. For this exact reason pushes even non-Redwood supporters to stop and think if one should preserve nature or let companies cut forests upon forests down. Sacred groves help such things become less likely to happen. “The importance of sacred groves in the conservation of biological diversity has been well recognized.” (Sacred Groves, M.L. Khan). Because some place is so protected and conserved, it prevents biodiversity from going away because usually the place is sacred to the community around it.
