The Sacrifices for Love: Forbidden Love in Romeo and Juliet
Have you ever felt love so strong that you would do literally anything and everything for that person? William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is a perfect example of that. Romeo and Juliet can be considered one of the most stereotypical love stories in the English language, but it portrays only a very specific type of love: young, irrational, and passionate love. The love that Romeo and Juliet have for one another would be best described as dropping a mento into a bottle of Coca-Cola. It is very sudden and strong, lasts for a short amount of time, and fizzes out in the end because they both kill themselves. Love is the driving force behind the events in Romeo and Juliet, particularly the romantic forbidden love between the two main characters. Although Romeo and Juliet are from opposing houses, they immediately fall in love with each other when seeing each other at a party, refuse to let anything come between them, and ultimately, give up their lives for love.

Within the first couple of minutes of meeting Juliet, he has already completely forgotten about Rosaline and starts talking about Juliet: “Oh, she doth teach the torches to burn bright! It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night, Like a rich jewel in an Ethiope’s ear, Beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear” (53). Romeo seems to forget all about his love for Rosaline the second he meets Juliet which spouts the question if he was never really in love with Rosaline to begin with.
