Sadie's Monologue
“W-w-where’s the dog?”, Sadie whimpered, trembling with fear.
“Don’t be afraid, sweetie. See, just like you, Parker here has parents that aren’t very nice to him and don’t treat him very well. Because I care about him and want him to have a better life, I decided to bring him here to my home and take care of him. He’s still adjusting, that’s all.”, explained Ms. Wilson.
“I just want to go home”, complained Sadie. “I love my parents, just sometimes I act a little disrespectful or ungrateful and I have to be punished. It’s not even my dad, he loves me, I promise.”

When the detectives finally arrived Mr. Smith was overjoyed.
“Please find my little girl,” Mr.Smith pleaded to the detectives, his voice laced with pain.

Now, first we just need some information from you,” said Julia.
“Where did you see your daughter last?” Asked Clay. Mrs. Smith shuddered at the sound of this question. Sadie was not her daughter, she reminded herself while unclenching the fist she instinctively made at the mention of Sadie.
“After I dropped her off at school yesterday,” answered Mr. Smith.
“I see, now did you pick her up after school?”
“No, she is supposed to ride the bus because my wife and I both work until 6:oo.”
“Is it possible she could be at any of her friends houses?” Added

“Ugh!”, he grunts from how large the suitcase is. “Will you be able to carry that, Scottie?” she says, her face, worn from time, twists with concern for her son. “Of course”, he laughs. “Okay, if you’re sure.” She says as she opens the metal gate to the front yard. They slowly walk through the cracked pathway until they reach the steps to the porch. Beatrice opens the sturdy door with her keys. “Honey, I’m home!” Scottie yells into the empty living room. “Must you do that every time you come inside the house?” She says fondly. “Of course, I must.” He says as if she should already have known the answer. While they were talking, Alice and Jake, Scottie’s younger siblings, heard his announcement and excitedly ran out of their room and down the beige stairs. “Stop making all that racket!” she admonishes her children. “SCOTTIE!” they yell out enthusiastically. “You’re home!” Alice states, full of wonder that her big older brother is finally back where he belongs. “Well, it’s obvious that I’m home unless I’m an imposer who’s secretly an alien”, He jokes, winking at Alice. “I definitely didn’t miss your humor,” Jake lightheartedly says. “Oh, come on, I tell the best jokes”, Scottie says smiling. “Yeah right, in your dreams”, Jake jokingly teases. “Leave your brother alone for right now. He had a long trip and he’s probably exhausted.” Beatrice gently tells to her…

Janie’s life, like many others, is heavily influenced by her family. Her only blood related relative, Nanny, manipulates Janie by forcing her perspective of the world upon Janie. In the early days of Janie’s youth, she saw love and marriage as natural and beautiful. Janie’s mind wandered to the idea of love and marriage, and in the spur of the moment, kissed a boy. Nanny saw this and became furious. She rushed out and made Janie promise to never do that again. Nanny even slapped Janie out of rage. When Nanny finally calmed down, she explained to Janie her misfortunes with men. Telling Janie about how her and Janie’s mother were abused by white men, Nanny planted the seed of doubt in Janie’s head. Letting it seep in slowly would be too slow. Nanny needed to force this ideal into Janie’s mind, whether she likes it or not. It is apparent when after Janie is married off Nanny says “Taint no use in you cryin’ Janie. Grandma does been long a few roads herself. But folks is meant to cry ‘bout something or other, Better leave things de way dey is. Youse young yet. No tellin’ whut mout happen befo’ you die. Wait awhile baby, you mind will change” (Hurston 24). Janie explained to her grandmother that she was dissatisfied with her marriage, and her…
