Fairfield College: 13SPL Leadership Camp

Introduction

As a part of training for their course, a three day camp will take place with twenty-five Year 13 students in Taupo and the students and teachers will be sleeping in tents at Reid’s Farm, which is an approximately 3.5km drive out from Taupo. Taupo is a suitable location for the camp because it provides free accommodation and it is close to Hamilton, which will significantly lower costs for the students. Reid’s Farm is a large, free campsite which lies on the banks of the Waikato River. There are basic toilet facilities and lots of space, but no power or water supply. This is not a serious problem because the group will be spending most of its time in Taupo, where there will be water supply and power outlets for cellphones. However it will mean that students and teachers will need to bring torches and water bottles, as well as a supply of water for when they are at camp.

It is important to also note that Reid’s Farm is one of Taupo’s most popular reserves. This means that there will be other campers and backpackers present. Because the students are older and more mature, it will be easier for the teachers-in-charge to control the noise level and litter in the area. It will also be a good opportunity for the students to demonstrate to their teachers that they can camp responsibly and respect other campers.

EOTC stands for Education Outside The Classroom, and is an important part of a student’s development. Anne Tolley from the Ministry of Education writes: “Students need to learn in a variety of contexts in order to gain the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values required to enjoy a healthy lifestyle; take responsibility for their safety; form positive and respectful relationships with their peers, teachers and environment; and participate in the

Pre-planning of the learning environment is essential. If a lesson would be better conducted in an outdoor space, it is important to have assessed and made that space safe beforehand - any dangerous plants removed such as stinging nettles, and animal mess, or broken glass or litter which could be potentially harmful. If it is a particularly hot day, shade must be available. Conversely if it is icy, paths must be cleared and any slipping hazard considered.…

Being entrusted to direct a summer camp for twenty-eight counselors and ninety campers has taught me to become a more versatile and confident leader. The Indian-American summer camp, from planning to production, is entirely student-run. The camp is very close to my heart as I previously was a camper. The camp allowed me to build friendships with my peers and my counselors, whom I looked up to as role models. It provided a support system for me as I was able to connect with people who could relate to me. I was incredibly humbled and driven to preserve the camp's legacy.…

In addition, there are frequent power outages throughout the country. ”In Malawi and most parts of Africa that don’t have electricity for television, the radio is our only connection to the world outside the village.”(67) William’s family also struggles to pay his school tuition. Even though William did not have the best tools or education to build the windmill, he kept trying until he succeeded. The only thing William has to work off of his the library book because it has the diagrams that he looks off of. The government offers electricity but only some people in Malawi are able afford it. Ten o’ clock is when the government does power cuts so William only gets 3 more hours to study. “Like most people, my family used kerosene lamps to find our way at night. These lamps were nothing more than a Nido powdered milk can with a cloth wick, filled with fuel and bent closed at the top.” (81)…

When we arrived at Camp CIMI, my roommates and I headed off to our assigned dorms. We were in Owl and our room was 120 B; thankfully it was near the bathrooms. After choosing our bunks, and setting all of our stuff down, everyone started to pull out their defenses in case someone attempted to prank us. When everybody became tired of playing cards, we unpacked, once we were finished, our room looked like a town that had been hit by a tsunami. However, it was during the night when the fun started. That night some people, that I will not mention, decided to ding-dong-ditch our room. A few people in my dorm became extremely annoyed, went outside, and did the same thing back to the pranksters. However, they had to sprint back to our dorm to avoid the teachers. The teachers were outside giving out citations because they caught some people who were out of their dorms after quiet hour. Once, the talking came to an end, we fell asleep and slept soundly throughout the night. All in all, staying in the dorms was an extremely interesting experience.…
