a great deal of fun together playing with puppets, dancing, and running around camp. While I was in the nursing role I was able to fix a medication error which I truly would have missed if it weren’t for the professor’s constant advice to check and recheck medication. I was able to pass all the medication with little to no problem. I was surprised by how well these kids took their medication. When I was young I would kick, scream, and cry over chewable or liquid medication. This kids were rockstars grabbing a handful of pills and being able to swallow them all.
What affected me most today was getting pulled out of my comfort zone.
In my past, I have worked with kids with many similar conditions as the three we were assigned at Easter Seals. But, I never before had to b the care provider for the kids. When I was a helper with the special needs choir at my school, there was always someone else there that was doing all the actual work with them. I have been given an absolutely new perspective on these kids. I have so much for the parents after experiencing the first night at camp. I am still baffled at how they do care for their child on an around the clock basis. I am so glad to be a part of the team that allows the parents to get a break for a weekend while their kids is at camp. The completely eye-opening experience for me today was while hanging out with AT. He had me come out of my shell as we played puppets, danced, and played dress up. The activities he was having me play with him, I haven’t done since I was a kid. This took me out of my comfort zone, which allowed me to grow as an individual. He was such a spirited and happy individual, which made my weekend absolutely enjoyable. His optimism and silly actions showed me the importance of positivity and laughing. This allowed me to realize how these kids are just like any other kid. Yes, they may need more help or attention, but they play just like anyone else would. This population has taught me so much over this weekend. I truly believe Easter Seals should be required for every Viterbo nursing student. It has had me open my eyes to a whole new
world.
Today I was able to be the nurse which allowed me to do my first medication pass on pediatric patients. Also, I was able to see the behind the scenes view of the process that goes into prepping medication for administration. One aspect that truly allowed my knowledge to shine was when a worried counselor came to the window saying that their camper had been drinking quite a bit of fluid all day and had yet to be able to void since being at camp. When then camp nurse didn’t really know what to respond with to the counselor, I stepped in and asked questions. This opened the counselor up to say that the camper believed his mom had to be the one to take him to the bathroom. I suggested that the counselor should team up with returning counselors whon the camper favored to try to get him to use the bathroom. I told her that this could possibly relieve some of his anxiety and allow him to be able to relax and go. Also the girl said that he had the urge to go but just couldn’t. I told them they should try to give him time, run water, use warm water, and if need be get his mom on the phone and see if she could talk him through it. After this conversation I had with her, the counselor was less worried and more determined to help her camper out.
If I could improve my nursing care at all I would go back and be more confident. I was at times more cautious than necessary when passing medication. If I could go back, I would tell myself to take a deep breath and to remember that these kids take their medications all the time so they know the drill on what to do. I often lose confidence if I get too nervous, which occurred at the beginning of medication pass. But, as time went on I was able to get into the grove of things and it all worked out.
I truly believe ta this point Shelly has done everything to prepare us for this weekend and make us have the best experience possible. She checked in to make sure we were all doing alright, was there for us when we needed her, and always had the knowledge and skills to assist us with anything that was thrown out way. I have learned so much about respite care and Easter Seals from her, which has made the experience amazing.
