INTRO:

The stresses of college can be exhausting. Daily assignments, Exams, and speeches pile up, and quickly become overwhelming, often to the point that our health is comprised. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, stress can lead to several health issues including:
Heart Disease
Strokes
Cancer
Gastrointestinal Problems
Weight Gain
Diabetes
Infertility
Skin disorders: like acne and eczema
And… a huge one for us college students:
Troubles with Memory, Concentration, and Learning

What if I told you there was a solution that has been proven to drastically reduce our bodies’ production of stress hormones and is used to prevent and treat all of the afore mentioned disorders.
Today, I want to tell you about a life changing activity known as Bikram Yoga: what exactly it is, some of its benefits, and why you should invest in Bikram.

BODY:
We’ve all heard of yoga, but what is Bikram. Bikram is often referred to as “hot” yoga, why? Because it takes place in a 105 degree, humidified room. This is intimidating for some and often deters them from trying Bikram, being an avid “Yogi” for several years now, I can personally assure you that this heat is completely bearable the first class, comfortable the second or third class, and (eventually) even becomes desirable. The heat helps promote blood flow and increases flexibility. It also helps our bodies sweat out all of those toxins we tend to subject it to.

Now, for you boys in the class thinking yoga is for girls. I’d like to start by telling you that assumption couldn’t be further from the truth, I have several men in my class at the local Bikram studio, a few of whom are devoted athletes and body builders. But if that’s not enough to get you into a studio, let’s talk about wardrobe.
What does one wear to a typical 105 degree Bikram session? Honestly, next to nothing. Men are usually seen in running style shorts, while women wear spandex shorts and a sports bra. Male or

    Bikram yoga was developed thirty years ago by Bikram Choudhury, a renowned Hatha Yoga Master. It is a specific yoga practice that is carried out in 105˚ F at 40% humidity for 90 minutes. Some studies and practitioners have suggested that Bikram yoga practice has positive impacts on physical health as well as decreasing stress and anxiety. There were certain inclusion criteria for participation in this study. Age was not an exclusion and participants ranged in age from 18 to over 60 years of age. This study sought to interview active students of Bikram yoga who have been practicing consistently for at least the last eight weeks, at a minimum of three times per week. Students meeting the requirements at the Bikram yoga studios in San Antonio were invited to complete the survey instrument from November 16 through November 26, 2011. Seventy-five students responded to the survey. The results indicated that there are significant positive results from regularly practicing Bikram yoga. Since Bikram yoga encourages students to hold poses in a “hot” room it increases heart rate and acts as a cardiovascular exercise without the high impact normally associated with cardio exercises. The results of the survey instrument yielded over 50% of respondents reporting an answer of “somewhat better” for all of the questions, indicating that most respondents see a benefit in their practice. Additionally, stress and anxiety decreased with over 80% of respondents reporting somewhat to much less anxious and stressed.
