Write a 125- to 150-word response to each of the following questions:
* What is the infectious agent (pathogen) that causes this infectious disease? For example, the name of the bacteria, virus, or parasite. Salmonella comes from bacteria called salmonella. Salmonella has been around for over a hundred years and there are many cases reported every year due to people not taking proper precautions to protect themselves from it.
* How is this infectious agent transmitted through food or water? …show more content…
One of the most common ways salmonella is transmitted is with raw or under cooked food (usually poultry). Some examples of things that could carry salmonella are: eggs, chicken, turkey and raw unpasteurized milk. Many people may consume raw egg without even knowing. Some products like salad dressing, cake frosting and mayo contain uncooked egg that can contain salmonella. Salmonella can also be transmitted just by handling raw meat or eggs. And it is also a good idea to wash hands after touching some animals that carry it as well such as : baby chicks, birds and reptiles. Infants can get salmonella more easily than adults and extra care should be taken when preparing their food or having to handle raw food and an infant at the same time.
* What is an example of a real life outbreak of this foodborne illness in the United States?

stores.
* What are the clinical symptoms, duration of the disease, and treatment if any?
Salmonella symptoms are a lot like many other illnesses so it is hard to determine if you have gotten sick from salmonella.
Normal symptoms of salmonella can be diarrhea, fever, nausea or abdominal cramps. The only way to determine 100% if you are ill due to salmonella is with laboratory tests. Most people that do become ill with salmonella do not need treatment because most cases clear up on their own after 5-7 days. If your condition worsens or you happen to still feel sick after that time period some antibiotics may be needed to clear out the salmonella. During this time is it very important to stay hydrated with
fluids.
* What steps can be taken to prevent further outbreaks? Include individual as well as environmental precautions and methods.
I have personally never had an experience with salmonella. But I do know that it is very important to make sure when you are cooking meals that you cook any type of meat thoroughly since it is considered the main cause of salmonella. Other then undercooked meat raw egg should not be consumed. Many people consume raw egg products without realizing it. I think the most common raw egg product that people consume is cookie dough. You should do some research to find out if any of your favorite products that you do not cook before use contain ingredients that could carry salmonella. Another way to prevent salmonella in your home would be to wash any fresh produce that you buy before consuming as these things may also be carrying the disease.
