The trial of Glenn Summerford intrigued Dennis Covington and caused him to think about snake handling churches. Covington began to embark on a journey to his self-discovery after his coverage of Glenn's trial. During the trial Dennis noticed that he was becoming extremely interested in snake-handling services. He also realized that he was confused about who he really was. The trial made Covington understand that he needs to explore the world of snake-handling and decide if it was meant for him.…
The author of Salvation on Sand Mountain gets drawn into the snake handling community. He becomes very intrigued in the snakes and begins to handle the snakes himself. Why is Dennis so interested in snake handling? Does his interest originate from past experiences?…
It’s a hard job to be a reporter and not get drawn into the subject in which you are reporting. Most people who go out for this job know this ahead of time and aren’t the type to be drawn in that easy. Certain topics become too personal to a reporter though and become near impossible for them no to become too attached or too involved in. For Dennis Covington God was the thing that became way too personal for him as he got way to involved in the church he was studying.…

The passage, “Sand Creek the Morning After” by M. Annette James, begins with the author sending us to 1989 at a reminiscent and joyous ceremony. The ceremony was at the University of Colorado’s Boulder campus in celebration of the renaming of Nicholas Hall. James directs us to this ceremony in order for her to introduce us to the significance of this event. Who was David Nicholas, and why was his name wanted off that dormitory? To the majority, Nicholas was considered a successful businessman and “hero” who made an extensive trip to ensure the university at Boulder would not be built to the south at Canon City. The university was so essential because it was a huge influence in Boulder’s development. As time went on Nicholas gained power and…
I believe that Ridley Scott did not accurately portray the biblical version of the Hebrew Exodus. Many things portrayed in the movie either didn’t happen in the bible or were very different than the Exodus. Some examples would be that Moses had a different personality in the movie, Moses didn’t perform the three miracles, God wasn’t a little boy, and several other things. These are a few of the problems that lead the movie away from the text.…
On the surface, Cold Mountain is the tale of a man trying to find his way home. However, once looked at in more detail, it is seen as a story of a man looking for faith. From the very first step, Inman’s journey is one of faith, a faith that he has lost in the Civil War and is on the road to recovering. We know little of Inman's life prior to his journey, but what we do learn tells us that he was at one point a Christian. In his youth he had been taught, and he believed in, the basics of the Christian faith. Specifically, he believed in heaven, the immortality of soul, and that we are all children of God. Cold Mountain is the story of a man who has undergone a traumatic experience, the likes of which has stolen away from him all optimism and hope for a better tomorrow.…

Since, so far, this is such a good book, I can’t put it down, and I have to resist going farther than two chapters. I will now be doing a "close reading"…
The video was filmed in two churches in Alabama and Georgia in what looks like the 60's, but in reality was the late 80's or very early 90's, I believe the copyright date is 1991. In Jesus' Name: Taking Up Serpents heavily documents the practice of snake handling in this religious sect, but mentions the consumption of strychnine very minimally. The people seem happy, but not particularly affluent. They are presumably in the Appalachian region of the states, where coal mining, poverty and a hard life are all too common. The whole thing is presented without commentary or criticism allowing the viewer to experience the culture and apply their own opinions. Taking Up Serpents shows us how literal interpretations of biblical texts are executed with fervor in the name of God. The filmmakers do not appear biased or like they have any hidden agenda. It seems to be a straight-forward documentation of a church service. The filmmakers did not go out of their way to make these people seem simple or poor, which I am sure would have been easy to do with selective editing.…
Great Story: Several Intricate Factors "The Rattler" is a short story about a man who feels he has to kill a snake, but doesn't want to. Not many people know of the used-to-be 150-mile excursion that the Glen Canyon had to offer. Not many people know how to sail a raft down a river for a week. Not many people know how to interact with nature and the animals that come with it. We seem to come from a world that is dependent on time and consumed in money. Edward Abbey is what you would call an extreme environmentalist. He talks about how it was an environmental disaster to place a dam in which to create Lake Powell, a reservoir formed on the border of Utah and Arizona. He is one of the few that have actually seen the way Glen Canyon was before they changed it into a reservoir. Today, that lake is used by over a million people, and is one of the biggest recreation hot spots in the western United States.…
Dennis Covington writes about the snake handling rituals that go on in Scottsboro, Alabama, in March on 1992. While going to the services held at the churches, Covington realizes that he is not only doing a story on other people's religions, but that he is also discovering his own religion. Covington creates feelings of sympathy and disgust for me while he talks about snake handling in southern churches. Through Covington's eyes I was exposed to his spiritual journey, family, and southern beliefs about snake handling. Covington's spiritual journey throughout Salvation on Sand Mountain was shocking. It makes one think that the phrase "everything happens for a reason" really is true. His first experience in a serpent-handling church was "exhilarating and unsettling" (11). Especially compared to Covington's small Methodist church in Birmingham, Al. The snake-handling church on Sand Mountain seemed to bring a different point of view to Covington about his spiritual life. For example, Covington stated that "he wanted to experience more" (11) because the services at The Church of Jesus with Signs Following always seemed to leave Covington wondering about what was going to happen next.…
As humans we sometimes want to just give up on life because it is so difficult. All the obstacles that come in our way can end up making us very weak. But in the movie The Shawshank Redemption, one of the most important lessons we learn is that persistence and perseverance are keys to success. The main character of the movie, Andy Dufresne, was an innocent man who was life imprisoned because of a wrongful conviction of murdering his wife and her lover. But he does not give up easily for his freedom, he is very patient and at the end he succeeds. Persistence and perseverance covers the psychological perspective in the Social Sciences because whatever Andy did to succeed and get his freedom, is because of the way he thought and acted.…
