Sam Houston's Heroic Hero
“Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power.”- Abraham Lincoln. Sam Houston was a man who faced adversity many times in his life. He made decisions that people would ridicule and criticize him for, but in the midst of all the stress he did what he believed was right. This made him heroic. Sam Houston was heroic because he showed good judgement even when a whole republic disagreed with him, was always honest to the people about what he thought was right, and was willing to put his career on the line to stand up for what was right. During the terrifying events of the Alamo, Sam Houston showed his great judgement by not asking for reinforcements. He knew that the Texan army had no chance of beating Santa Anna there. So, he stuck with his gut feeling and decided that he should not bring any extra casualties into this war. He knew that the people he saved from being killed at the Alamo could be used later. When Sam Houston made this decision, he knew that their would be consequences. The families of the men and women killed at the Alamo most likely blamed Houston for their deaths. …show more content…
The most heroic decision that Sam Houston made was when he refused to let Texas join the Confederate south. He made sure that everyone knew that he thought slavery was wrong and that it had the potential to demolish the United States. Houston was willing to risk everything for the greater good. He risked his life, his career, and even the lives of other Texans, all to stand up for what was right. In 1860, a painting was drawn that depicted Sam Houston riding on a boat that was labeled “constitution”. The painting showed Houston in that boat attempting to sail away from a storm that was being created by America. The symbolism of the painting was that America and the south were betraying their constitution and that Houston was the only one protecting

When you hear the name George McClellan, courageous, brave, heroic, and decisive are probably not the first words that come to mind. That's probably because none of those words describe him. George McClellan was an indecisive coward, unfit for his position as a general, partially because of his sympathy for his troops, but also because of his "conspiracy theories" which constantly screwed over the union troops under his leadership.…

Stephen F. Austin’s father (Moses Austin) was the original person to pursue a settlement in Texas (which was part of Mexico). In 1821, he had been granted a significant amount of land in the territory, but died shortly after. That was when Stephen F. Austin became the one to move forward with the settlement. It originally attracted 297 US families and continued to grow. By 1830, the Mexican government was greatly concerned with the large population of US citizens moving to Texas, so they closed the border. When this happened, Austin took action to convince Mexico’s President to reopen the border, because many Texan settlers still had families in America who wanted to settle there. The President of Mexico listened to him and did as he asked.…

The Mexicans celebrated throughout the afternoon hearing news that they had defeated the Texans in a battle called battle of San Patriotic march 4th backup arrived, Santa Anna recommended a assault on the Alamo. Many of his troop thought it would be best to wait for 2 12 pounder cannons to arrive on march 7th. Overall i really enjoyed the series the Alamo it was very detailed and had useful information. It actually caught my attention and was not boring at all. It was kinda like a old western which I liked a lot. Although there was one guy that survived the Alamo a Texan which none survived the Alamo . and he wanted to kill as many Mexicans as possible. He killed this little boy's whole family and later the little boy recognized him at a eating and went and found a gun and shoot him. While he was dying he said that he understood why the boy shoot him. He just went around killing innocent Mexicans , but in the end he found god and straightened up. In the beginning I wanted him to die because he was so violent to Mexicans that were not even doing anything, but at the end I wish he would have lived because he turned into a god man. wish that instead of the Texans holding Santa Anna prisoner they would have killed him Santa Anna was a…

They are many heroes that we have to thank in American History for making our country what it is today. We are a country made of freedom and believe in personal rights. But all these rights did not come without fighting to keep our freedom. There were many battles fought and many battles won for this freedom. Texas in particular was a battlefield for Texas’ independence against Mexico. Lorenzo de Zavala was the Republic of Texas’ first vice president, when Texas had first won its independence from Mexico at the Battle of San Jacinto and became a republic of its own. It wasn’t until later when Texas became a part of the United States, unfortunately De Zavala would not be around to see this dream come true.…

Texas history, as we learned about it in text books, has only told half of the story of Texas Independence. Every school child learns the story of the Alamo and how the brave souls paid with their lives for our freedom. What the historians failed to mention was all of the patriots who were involved, leading up to the Alamo and those who fought after. One of these patriots was Juan Sequin, who ended up paying for his patriotism with banishment, and being marked a traitor. It would be many years after his death before the full story of what this man, and others, actually achieved.…

There were two collections I used for primary sources: the Sam Houston Papers, which is a loose collection of various documents pertaining to Sam Houston’ life, and the Hearne collection, which is a collection of Sam Houston’s letters to various people throughout his life compiled by Houston’s great-grandson. Most of these letters are sent to family and friends, but a few also were addressed to fellow Congressmen from Houston’s time in the U.S. Senate in the 1850s. It is in these letters that the true political stances of Houston can most likely be found, and in others such exhortations as like can be found, “My son I wish you to love and revere the Union. This is my injunction to all my boys!”.3 I examined the letters primarily in the late period of Sam Houston’s life in order to gain an insight into the true views of Sam Houston regarding the secession crisis.…
